Are We Addicted to Chocolate Like We Are to Coffee?

Ever feel like your love for chocolate mirrors your coffee addiction? I investigated this for a long time but only recently found a convincing case in a story I found on Medium which surprised me.

You might be onto something. Both contain compounds with similar effects on the brain. While coffee boasts caffeine, chocolate has theobromine—a milder stimulant, but one that still influences mood and alertness.

Theobromine, found in cacao beans, shares a chemical structure with caffeine, yet it delivers a smoother, longer-lasting lift without the jittery side effects. However, just like caffeine, too much theobromine can cause negative reactions, including restlessness and increased heart rate.

Want to explore the science behind your cravings and why you might feel addicted to chocolate? In my one of my favourite articles, Dr Mehmet Yildiz explores how theobromine and caffeine influence us differently and what research tells us about their impact on addiction. Could chocolate be as addictive as coffee?

Find out more in his full article, where he unwraps the mystery of these two compounds, and how they shape our daily indulgences. Stay tuned for the full breakdown which I plan to write soon.

Here is the link to this insightful story which I found on Medium today.

Thanks for curating this nostalgic story, Dr Albert. I forgot about it and did not expect anyone would notice it on Medium or here. I remember now why I wrote about it, as some of my clients suffered from both caffeine and chocolate addictions. I know this topic is your forte as a mental health professional. I am glad it resonated with you. I liked your first blog post, in which you beautifully articulated your points. Welcome to our community blogs as an author, editor, and subject matter expert. I look forward to your insights. I appreciate your support of our community as a founding member.

I am not addicted to coffee as I don’t like it much. But I am addicted to dark chocolate and sometimes eat the whole bar while playing games. Do you think it might cause any mental health issues in the long term?
