Welcoming the Value of Repurposing Content Across Platforms
Throughout my career, I faced the challenge of reaching an audience for my scientific work. Simplifying complex issues for the public was difficult, and finding readers for these simplified messages was even harder.
As researchers, our primary outlets were scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, and writing for trade journals was costly and challenging unless our work was sensational. The intricacies of chemical changes in the brains and hearts of mice seemed to garner little interest from the public.
In recent years, I turned to social media, but capturing readers’ attention was problematic. Important messages often got lost in the noise of vanity metrics like random follows and likes on platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Genuine engagement seemed scarce.
Two years ago, I was invited to Medium, where I finally experienced meaningful interactions with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds. I began sharing my experiences and thoughts on various issues, forming several online friendships.
Inspiration from Influential Writers
While on Medium, I observed successful writers whose work and approach captivated me. Three Australian writers — Tim Denning, Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, and Aiden — stood out. They influenced me through their leadership, education, bravery, and humility.
Despite being younger than me, I learned from their experiences and admired their ability to connect with a large audience.
Each of these writers has a presence on Substack despite their massive followings on Medium and social media. Inspired by their success and the principles they embody, I decided to explore Substack.
Dr. Mehmet Yildiz, whom I have known personally for a long time, encouraged me to join Medium, believing my 53 years of research and life experience could contribute to the platform and inspire the younger generation. His dedication to diversity, inclusion, fairness, and collaboration inspired me to follow his path.
Tim Denning, despite some criticism, is another community builder whose work I admire. As an editor, I reviewed and published many of his stories on ILLUMINATION-Curated, always finding them educational. His clever use of social media and his Substack newsletter impressed me.
Aiden, the same age as my oldest grandchild, possesses remarkable intellectual and emotional intelligence. He wears many hats, from editing and curating to serving as a media coordinator and publication owner, demonstrating his community-building prowess.
Why Substack Besides Medium
While Dr. Yildiz mentioned diversifying content across three platforms, NewsBreak didn’t resonate with me. Its advertisement-based content isn’t appealing to me in my old age. I prefer platforms that prioritize meaningful content and engagement.
Medium’s community impressed me, but it also has issues like content censorship, algorithmic problems, and account security concerns.
These factors hindered my success as a writer. Medium’s censorship of critical societal issues was particularly upsetting. This drove me to seek a more reliable platform for publishing my content without censorship and ensuring interested readers have access to it.
My recent interest in Substack started after reading an eye-opening story of Dr Yildiz based on his observations, analysis, and insights from his own mentors.

Then, he provided a step-by-step guide helping me understand the process of Substack. I believe this will be a valuable resource for beginners like me.

My goal is to publish all my stories on Substack first and then repurpose them on Medium. I also plan to curate exceptional stories from my new Health and Science publication on Medium and promote them through Substack.
This approach will help me reach a broader audience without censorship and support as many writers as possible, aligning with my altruistic goals in retirement.
When I build a large audience on Substack, I plan to monetize the newsletter. The income will be donated to a new initiative by ILLUMINATION-Curators, a team of 155 volunteer editors who will support Substack creators through a new publication on Medium, and they will also promote the profiles and work of writers through the newsletters of ILLUMINATION on Substack. In addition Dr Mehmet Yildiz wrote a best selling book called Substack Mastery which accelerated my learning. I was an editor of the book and also a beta reader so I wrote a review of the book here.
