Upon joining the video conference, I noticed that a limited number of leaders were in attendance. The digital air was dense, it reeked of unsaid fear. Delivered in my boss’s tight voice, the order was chilling and clear: due to deteriorating market conditions and the need to protect the company’s bottom line, we needed to identify one person from each leader’s hierarchy to be let go as part of an organizational restructuring. We had one hour to submit the decision.”
