Summary of Monthly Updates for ILLUMINATION Publications
Dear writers and readers,
Our Chief Editor, Dr Mehmet Yildiz (Main), shared key updates and reflections for November 2024. After nearly a year, he wrote this detailed newsletter from his main account to reach a broad audience and transparently share the reality of our growing publications.
Since 2023, ILLUMINATION has grown exponentially, now involving over 33,000 writers and 151,000+ readers. This growth, while exciting, has led to significant challenges. Medium’s platform, designed for around 1,000 writers, struggles under the weight of our community. Despite implementing various changes and creating 14 additional publications, the workload has become overwhelming.
Dr Yildiz highlighted two major issues for publishing delays:
- Editor Limitations: Medium restricts us to 30 volunteer editors, which isn’t sufficient for our needs.
- Publishing Bug: A persistent bug limits some editors to publishing only 15 drafts daily, leading to delays and frustration.
Despite these hurdles, our 29 volunteer editors manage to publish 40 to 60 stories daily. Dr. Yildiz, being one of the 30 editors, himself has been publishing around 100 drafts daily to keep things moving but recognizes this isn’t sustainable, especially with a backlog now exceeding 900 drafts.
New Issues from AI Content
The influx of AI-generated content has surged, creating additional burdens. Despite clear guidelines, some new writers continue submitting AI-generated or low-quality content, frustrating our editors. This situation has made it necessary to tighten our submission policies.
Updated Guidelines
Our main guidelines are straightforward:
Writers are now limited to one draft per day to manage the backlog better. Additionally, any writer submitting AI-generated content will be removed from our publications.

Innovative Solutions
Dr. Yildiz has analyzed the community and identified three types of writers:
- Occasional Writers: Post infrequently, adding minimal workload.
- Passionate Writers: Write for the joy of it and remain patient with delays.
- Freelance Writers: Post frequently and rely on Medium for income, often leading to frustrations when delays occur.
To support this third group, we will pilot a priority service in November. This service aims to help freelance writers grow their audience and income beyond Medium, leveraging external networks. Participation is optional and can be canceled anytime.
Expanding Opportunities
In addition to the priority service, Dr. Yildiz has opened his website to guest bloggers, creating a community blog to increase the visibility of our writers’ work beyond Medium and Substack.
