Constrained Rage: The Challenges of a Complicated Voting System

I survived, but almost blew a gasket

I had to do my part to keep the cackling empty suit out of the Whitehouse. My wife didn’t want to vote, that’s her choice, she would have voted for Kamala, so it’s all good. We don’t have a car so we asked the neighbor across the breezeway for help.

We got in the car and I took out my voter registration card. We headed to the address on the card. The lack of a line relieved me. My wife had a doctor’s appointment and I didn’t want her to be late. I entered the building and took out my photo identification.

The Wrong polling place, no worries

The person at the desk said I was at the wrong polling station. She gave me an address. I muttered curses as I headed back to the car. We headed to the other Polling Station.

We live in a small town, so we arrived at the other polling station a few minutes later. Again, I entered the building and showed my Identification.

A pattern developed, and I started to get angry

It wasn’t the right place. How many Polling Stations does a small town in South Carolina need, For God’s Sake? I didn’t know what was going to happen, they were going to have me arrested or I was going to have another stroke. I haven’t been that angry in a long time.

They say, “The Third Time’s the Charm,” The man took my card, I told him what led me there, so he made a phone call and gave me a ballot.

Worrying about how I was going to get to the Polls upset me. They gave me the runaround and I didn’t appreciate it. I count my blessings.

I’m glad I dealt with it and voted, a lot of people didn’t bother to

A lot of people don’t vote at all, and it seems like they are the ones who complain the loudest. Voters are the only ones with the Right to complain.

As I went through the day. Between fits of anger. I thought of ways voting could be easier. Three reforms I would make if I could.

The things to make voting easier and maybe increase participation

First of all, I would make sure voters knew where they were supposed to vote. There was plenty of time to send me an updated card. I didn’t know my polling place had changed until I showed up, and that’s not right.

It has been an ongoing problem since we moved to this small town. We don’t get all our mail, and often mail we send never arrives at its destination. If they sent me an updated card I never received it. Post Office Employees need to do their jobs.

It might surprise people, but not everyone can afford to own a car. There should be free or low-cost transportation provided so people can get to the polls.

I don’t trust mail-in voting, but if the Postal Service was competent I would rethink my position. Voting shouldn’t be as hard to do as it was this morning and I’m still irritated.

I’m grateful I live in a country where I can vote. A lot of people in other countries don’t have that right. It’s a disgrace that more people don’t vote in this country.

Final Thought:

People need to take voting seriously. I don’t understand how people can blow off voting. I don’t remember what country. I was watching the news in the ’80s. There was a country having an election. People were being fired on by soldiers to keep them from voting.

They dodged bullets and the survivors cast their votes. Voting is that serious. Lives depend on it. I’m glad I cast mine.
