This week I decided to write a few reflective pieces. I wrote a story that discusses financial abuse in Ghanaian spousal relationships and marriages.
Here’s an excerpt from the story:
Is it possible for a mentally sound individual to exist without the need for new clothes or miscellaneous items? These women are unemployed and may have personal needs, but they are at the mercy of their spouses. The spouse may not allow them to find employment and may not give them the financial means to fulfil their basic needs.
This leads to a gradual erosion of the victim’s self-respect and ego. The fact that there are videos online that advise men on how to dampen a woman’s ego tells you that my claims are not unfounded.
No adult or human is capable of finding worth in themselves if they have ownership of nothing. Having and owning things is our way of building confidence and self-worth.
Any person who is denied this basic innate desire is being abused, whether they recognise it or not. In what I believe to be another form of financial abuse, the abuser sets up some avenue for the victim to earn money, but the abuser supervises the victim.
By talking about it, I hoped to raise awareness about it. I hope that most victims recognise the signs and take the necessary steps needed to escape this abuse.
