Medium Almost Died, But It Is Recovering

Yesterday, I learned something shocking. Medium — the beloved platform where I’ve been pouring my heart, soul, and keyboard clicks for years — “almost died,” according to its CEO. Yes, the site that helped us share stories, build communities, and earn pennies nearly bit the dust.

I discovered this tidbit from my engineer friend Fred. He casually asked me to be his referee for a job application. Intrigued, I asked, “What job?” Fred then dropped the plot twist of the year: He’s applying for a senior backend engineer role at Medium.

While I was busy refreshing my stats to check if I’d escaped the 1 Cent Club, Fred was plotting to join the team working to save Medium. Naturally, I had questions:

How did Medium almost die?
Why didn’t anyone tell me about a loyal contributor with almost 20K followers?
How does Fred — a total outsider — know more about this than me?

Fred, ever the tech sleuth, sent me a screenshot featuring Medium’s CEO, Tony, and some juicy details. Tony, it turns out, made some bold moves to keep the platform afloat.

Seeing that, I felt a mix of gratitude and empathy. Running a platform like Medium isn’t easy, and Tony’s decisions probably involved more late-night stress than we’ll ever know.

So Tony’s efforts were not wasted. In a single day, my stats hit the roof. Let me show you how!

From 1 Cent to 5 Cents: My Meteoric Rise

I’ve officially joined the 5 Cents Club! That’s a 400% increase in earnings. Who needs Wall Street when you’ve got Medium’s algorithm? I’m practically the Jeff Bezos of penny earnings now.

Can you believe this? 42 paying members of Medium actually read my hilarious story! With a 75% read ratio, I’m practically doing cartwheels. Even my boosted stories barely hit 50%. Looks like the algorithm’s finally pulling its weight — better results than a boost and without the extra caffeine!

Meanwhile, my good friend Mike is still sulking in the 2 Cents Club. Mike, if you’re reading this, take heart: You’re still ahead of the 1 Cent crew, and you’ve got room to grow. Let’s toast to your two cents fortune and my five cents fame!

But moments like these remind us why we’re here. Writing isn’t just about pennies. It’s about telling our stories, connecting with readers, and celebrating small victories — like just a clap, a kind comment, or perhaps one highlight.

Please don’t overdo these things, as you might be labeled as a spammer, lose your MPP, or even your account might be suspended.

Hollywood Calling: My Next Blockbuster Script

This whole saga is so dramatic that I’m turning it into a movie.

The title will be Medium Almost Died. It will star Tony as the fearless CEO, Fred as “backend guy #1,”, other actors and actresses, and of course me as the loyal but clueless writer.

It’s got all the makings of an Oscar-worthy production. (Fun fact: I know a thing or two about Oscars. Medium even boosted one of my stories about them back in the golden days.)
