Today, we will introduce you to a new volunteer editor and content curator of ILLUMINATION Integrated Publications on Medium and Substack.
When Mustavi Tonoy first started writing online, he didn’t imagine how much it would change the way he sees the world. What began as a passion for photography and technology slowly grew into something bigger: a way to tell stories that connect with people.
Over the years, he has realized that writing is more than putting words together. It is making complex ideas feel simple, sparking curiosity, and helping readers walk away with something new.
Now, his work is published on platforms like Medium, Substack, and DigitalMehmet. Each space gives him a chance to reach readers who are curious about the future of photography, technology, and creativity. Alongside being a writer, Mustavi has also found his calling as an editor at Illumination, one of the largest and most diverse communities on Medium.
In this story, we introduce not only writing but also why he joined the Illumination community as a volunteer publisher, editor, and curator. He even posted his first curated collection today to help other writers.

From Photography to Storytelling
Mustavi’s journey started with a camera in his hands. Photography was his first love because it taught him how to frame the world in new ways. Each photo was more than an image; it was a story waiting to be told.
Naturally, writing followed. He began sharing tips about digital photography, experimenting with reflections on modern creativity, and diving into the latest tech trends.
But he quickly noticed something important. Many readers felt locked out of these topics. Technology, for instance, often comes wrapped in jargon and complexity. Photography, too, can be weighed down by technical terms that make it intimidating for beginners. He wanted to change that.
So he made a promise to himself: his writing would be simple, direct, and human. Whether he’s talking about the latest camera gear or exploring how technology shapes our lives, his goal is to strip away the unnecessary layers and write as if he’s talking to a friend.
Why He Joined Illumination
When Mustavi discovered Illumination, he immediately felt at home. It’s a place where thousands of voices come together, each bringing their own perspective.
The diversity of stories is what makes the publication so unique. From personal growth essays to tech deep-dives, Illumination captures the spirit of human curiosity.
He joined Illumination as a writer first. It gave him a space to share his ideas with a broader audience, and it pushed him to grow.
But over time, he realized that he wanted to contribute in another way: by helping other writers shine. That’s when he stepped into an editorial role.
Editing, to him, goes beyond “fixing” someone’s work. He focuses on collaboration. He sees the potential in a draft and helping a writer bring their voice out. At Illumination, he works with contributors to refine structure, clarify their ideas, and make their stories more engaging for readers.
What Editing Means to Him
When Mustavi edits, he tries to see a piece through the eyes of a reader. Is the message clear? Does the story flow? Are there moments where the writing could be tighter or more inviting?
Sometimes it’s a small adjustment like shifting a paragraph or simplifying a sentence. Other times it’s about encouraging a writer to look into their idea, to find the part of their story that truly connects.
What he enjoys most is the motivational transformation he gets. A draft that feels rough at first can become a piece that shines. Editing, for him, is about respect for the writer’s effort, their ideas, and the reader’s precious time.
Balancing Writing and Editing
Balancing both roles has made him sharper as a creator. Writing makes him a better editor because he understands the struggles of facing a blank page, the frustration of trying to make something work, and the joy of finally seeing a piece come together for his readers.
Editing makes him a better writer because it sharpens his eye for detail and reminds him to always put the reader first while helping writers find their best voices.
For him, the two roles are like photography and storytelling. A photograph captures a moment, but a story gives it meaning. Writing captures his ideas, but editing helps give them shape.
Helping Writers Grow
One of the most rewarding parts of Mustavi’s editorial role at Illumination is seeing writers grow. He has watched contributors gain confidence, find their rhythm, and connect with audiences in ways they didn’t think were possible.
Sometimes all it takes is a nudge, a reminder that clarity matters more than complexity, or that the best stories often come from personal experience.
His approach is always to encourage improvement. Writing online can feel lonely and cause vulnerability. Sharing our words with strangers is not easy. So, he respects every writer who takes that leap. His role is to make sure their effort pays off by helping their stories reach readers in the best possible form.
Writing with Readers in Mind
At the heart of what Mustavi does is one simple belief: writing must focus on the reader. He always asks: How will this feel to the person reading it?
He aims for clarity, warmth, and connection. He avoids heavy technical terms unless they’re necessary, and he writes in a way that anyone can understand, even if they’ve never picked up a camera or read about emerging technology before.
That philosophy shapes his editing as well. A good story doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be honest, clear, and human.
As he continues to write and edit with Illumination, Mustavi’s mission is to create and support stories that inform, inspire, and connect. He wants readers to feel like they’ve gained something valuable from each article for knowledge, perspective, or the joy of reading a well-told and interesting story.
For writers, he hopes to be a guide who helps them trust their voice, refine their craft, and reach an audience that truly appreciates their work.
