Science-Backed Herbs That Can Charge Our Fight Against Alzheimer’s Disease

When we talk about brain health, it’s not just about maintaining a healthy organ, free from diseases, but also about empowering it with the necessary cognition and memory.

Ancient wisdom from so many herbs has acquired a backseat with the advent of technological innovations. However, recent scientific research has revealed the potential of natural approaches in enhancing the overall capacity of brain cells.

One of the daunting challenges in modern medicine is Alzheimer’s disease. The affected families not only lose hope but also lack clarity in how to manage this decline in mental health with age advancement. Taking care of the elderly becomes more problematic and challenging when they are low in cognition and intellect. This is when they become increasingly dependent on family members for their daily living activities.

The recent scientific innovations relying on biomarker studies and advanced neuroimaging techniques, despite improving Alzheimer’s disease management, often remain inconclusive in the early stages of the disease. Due to this huge gap in early detection, cognitive decline and memory loss often remain undetected and unexplored in their early stages.

Scientists, researchers, physicians, and naturalists are all on the same page when it comes to the holistic care of those with Alzheimer’s disease. By integrating lived experiences gained over centuries and medical literature, we can achieve better clarity about this disease and identify robust ways to improve early detection.

Herbal medicine has become a fancy buzzword these days. Many commercial activities are underway in the name of herbal medicine. However, as I understand from scientific research, we still have a long way to go to fully understand the true potential of herbs in controlling a variety of acute and chronic diseases.

Various standalone herbs target specific signs or symptoms. Many other herbs not only act as antioxidants but also possess neuroprotective properties. Some of these herbs have the potential to counteract neuroinflammation and diminish beta-amyloid plaques or extracellular deposits of amyloid beta protein in the brain’s gray matter.

These herbs are often readily available and have been used in our kitchens for centuries. Whether these herbs have fewer side effects or greater efficacy than standard treatment approaches has been a matter of debate among healthcare professionals.

With thorough research of medical literature, I am presenting a few of the powerful herbs that can help manage Alzheimer’s disease symptoms or even prevent or delay its progress following their optimal consumption over time.

The herbs in the spotlights include:

  • Turmeric
  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Ashwagandha
  • Bacopa monnieri
  • Panax ginseng
  • Gotu kola
  • Neem
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Tulsi
  • Shankhpushpi

Altogether, these herbs can improve fat absorption, reduce amyloid plaques, lower inflammation, minimize free radicals/oxidative stress, enhance circulation, improve cognition/memory, counter excessive protein buildup, stimulate nerve growth, and reduce stress with age advancement.

Integrating these powerful herbs into our lifestyle under expert health supervision is something we cannot afford to ignore, given the high risk of mental health complications as we hit our 60s. This strategy can bring laurels as soon as we integrate it with other time-tested lifestyle improvement approaches, such as stress management, sound sleep, mental stimulation, aerobic exercise, and a nutritious diet.

However, yes, whatever steps you take to enhance your mental health and cognition, obtaining expert advice from your treatment provider is a mandatory requirement.

This is just the beginning as we kick-start our journey for a health-oriented present and future. Both scientific evidence and anecdotes of living experiences of so many healthcare experts and patients have revealed the power of evidence-based herbal medicine in minimizing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

As a health scientist and scholarly communicator, it’s my firsthand duty to disseminate reliable information based on sound science and to challenge all commercial interventions whose sole motive is to generate profits at the expense of health and wellness.
