MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS

I’m very much aware that World Mental Health Day has passed — but I need to make some things clear.

There are two important observations I have made when it comes to protecting our mental health. It is having that person who gets you and being your own person during down times.

I’m gonna be honest about this, especially coming from a personal experience.

Sometimes,I feel like I have different personalities. Or probably I’m just hurt. I can be quite funny and goofy at times— and everyone might think that I’m just being silly. Not necessarily because I’m happy,I just wanted to cover up my sadness.

You know that lonely feeling inside, like you have people around but so alone on the inside— that’s how I felt.

But I just kept being silly to convince myself that I’m not sad. I was dismissing the thoughts of my hurt inside — it was frustrating. But I just did it to survive,so I won’t get depressed. And sometimes,if it meant embarrassing myself and defaming my value just to “feel among”. I did that to protect my mental health. I know how a lot of people get depressed,I didn’t want to be in those shoes.

It hurts — especially thinking about it now.

But all these feelings — someone finally understood it. I didn’t have to say much, but it was like we were both interpreting our minds without stressing. And that’s how I got to understand that I’m not alone.

We all need that person that we feel the same with. When we just spill those weaknesses, it’s a form of medicine that heals us. We don’t have to give or be given advice — they’re so lame — especially during times like this.

And,we also have to be our safe space. Let us also find a way that we can heal our sadness without needing people to always be there.

We ought to stop finding temporary things as our cure for sadness. When these things aren’t available, we would start to blame them for not being there.

We find social media, friends, all sorts to make us feel better. They aren’t bad but what do you do when they’re not there. All these are temporary comforts or should I say “healing”.

Let’s begin to analyze our thoughts and sadness ourselves. Let’s find something that can give us comfort but also gives us the space to ponder on our thoughts.

Why did I say this? If we all sit down, probably in a corner and think of the reasons we feel down, there’s a high chance we drown in them unable to save ourselves. And that can be a risk to depression.

I like  to play Subway Surf when I’m sad at times. It’s just like swimming. There are times we might drown but we all have a life jacket to keep us from drowning.

That’s it. My life jacket is Subway Surf. In case I’m too wrapped up in my emotions,I must make sure that horrible policeman doesn’t get up to me.

We’re not alone. And neither should we rely solely on temporary comfort for our healing.

Your mental health matters— secure it.
