Dad’s Go-To Skunk Story: A Family Favorite That Never Gets Old

One of my dad’s favorite stories, and mine as well

Me and my dad, and uncle Richard would be talking when my dad would go into story mode. He loved to tell stories. The problem was that I heard them so many times I knew them by heart. He would tell one that never bored me no matter how many times he told it.

My dad was a lifelong soldier

My dad was in the Army for two years before he joined the Air Force. I don’t remember which branch he was in, and it doesn’t matter. I’m guessing Army, but I’m not sure. Anyway, the squadron or platoon he was with had a mascot.

The mascot was a tame skunk. The skunk was used to being around people, and it got along fine with everyone. It was a cool creature, and what made it cooler was it had never been de-scented.

It had the weapon but didn’t realize it

That’s right, it still had its God-given weapon. it never used it. It forgot the weapon existed. It enjoyed its status as a loved and respected mascot. There is always an idiot in every group. In this case, the idiot got what was coming.

As I said before, skunks are cool. They don’t spray people out of meanness, and they will warn you before they spray you in your stupid face. One of the troops decided to tease the skunk. The skunk didn’t appreciate the teasing. I’m sure it felt betrayed.

The guy probably laughed for a minute

As the teasing continued, the skunk started to dance. Skunks have a series of behaviors they display before ruining a hapless human’s day. As the skunk danced, the dumb soldier laughed. The laughter continued as the soldier ignored the bystander’s warnings.

The skunk, tired of warning the fool off and sprayed him. The skunk ruined the soldier’s day. I wish I could have seen it, I bet it was funny as Hell. My dad didn’t say whether the skunk blinded the guy.

I hope it was released in the wild, but my dad never said

They had to get rid of the skunk. I don’t know if they released it to the wild, or what, but once it lost its innocence, it was all over. My mom and dad loved animals and passed that love to my siblings and me.

Animals are neat, and humans should respect them. If that soldier had any respect or love for animals, the skunk wouldn’t have sprayed him. I hope the guy grew up and learned his lesson. I’m sure he never teased a skunk again.

Final Thought:

Love and respect animals. Please don’t make them pay the price of your ignorance because they don’t deserve that. If you won’t respect them, at least leave them alone.

Do skunks warn before spraying?
If you happen to run across a skunk and appear to be aggressive, you make just be a victim of its infamous spray. Do…wildliferemovalusa.com
