The word “just” sounds harmless enough, doesn’t it? It’s polite and contained but equally minimising. But it often shows up at the exact moment someone is escaping accountability or reducing the impact of something – quietly reframing the issue. It is minimising language.

Take, for example, “I was trying to help” becomes “I was just trying to help”.
And suddenly the speaker looks innocent, and your reaction looks “too much”.

The shift is immediate and irreversible.

We need to understand when “just” is appropriate and how it works psychologically. To know when it’s a habit and when it’s strategic and why it matters if you’re trying to hold onto clarity in uncomfortable conversations. 🧠✨
