And Why You Should Join our New Publication ILLUMINATION Local News and Documentary
Curator’s Note: ILLUMINATION Local News and Documentary is a new publication on Medium.com that invites writers, readers, curators, and editors to share local stories with a global audience. Launched by Dr. Mehmet Yildiz and Dr. Michael Broadly and led by Aiden MC, the publication emphasizes documentary journalism for revealing the everyday experiences of communities often overlooked by major media. It aims to slow down storytelling to provide context and deeper connections. Writers are encouraged to share authentic, well-structured narratives supported by evidence. The publication not only benefits contributors by enhancing their credibility and reach but also provides readers with valuable insights into diverse community challenges and solutions worldwide. This article was penned by Aiden MC, who will be leading this special publication on Medium and Substack.
Dear Subscribers,
I created the publication called ILLUMINATION Local News and Documentary on Medium.com and you are welcome to join it as a writer, reader, curator, or even a volunteer editor. This new publication, ILLUMINATION Local News and Documentary, will capture those stories and bring them to readers across the world.
Our senior editor and content curator Dr Michael Broadly, DHSc also introduced this publication and wrote the first story yesterday. Here is what he said:
As the editorial team, we will amplify stories published in this publication. Like Dr Broadly, I will also curate stories from this publication and share them on Medium, my Substack newsletters, and my blog.
Here is a story about the invitation written by our chief editor Dr Mehmet Yildiz: Welcome to “ILLUMINATION Local News and Documentary” Publication, Opening on 19 March 2026: A Global Platform for Authentic Local Voices and Enjoyment of Discerning Readers Following ILLUMINATION publications on Medium and Substack
Why Documentary Journalism Matters
Most large media outlets focus on big headlines like politics, national crises, and global markets. These topics are important, but they rarely capture the texture of everyday life inside communities.
Documentary storytelling fills that gap. A documentary story observes reality closely. It pays attention to people, places, and experiences that are generally overlooked. It explains how events affect real communities rather than merely summarizing them from afar.
In other words, documentary journalism presses the “zoom in” button. Instead of distant commentary, readers see what is happening on the ground, such as a local environmental effort, a school initiative, a neighborhood project, or a cultural tradition.
These stories may appear small at first glance, but together they reveal something powerful: how communities adapt, innovate, and solve problems.
Why Readers Love Documentary Stories
Readers today are overwhelmed with information. Many headlines compete for attention, and the pace of the news cycle often leaves little room for reflection.
Documentary storytelling offers something different. It slows the story down. Readers gain context rather than fragments. They learn how events affect people and why those events matter.
For example: A reader in Australia might learn how a school in South America improves education through community collaboration, a writer in Europe might discover environmental innovation emerging from a small town in Asia or a student in Africa might find inspiration in a grassroots health initiative in North America.
These stories travel across borders, turning local experiences into global insights.
What We Expect from Writers
Think of documentary storytelling as a creative quest with responsibility. Writers become observers and guides, helping readers explore their communities.
The first rule is authenticity. Whenever possible, stories should grow from genuine local knowledge and real experiences. Authentic perspectives naturally strengthen credibility.
Context matters as well. Readers need to understand why an event matters within the community and what others might learn from it. Clarity is essential. Strong stories are concise, structured well, and easy to follow.
Evidence also helps. Interviews, public information, and local documentation can strengthen credibility and enrich the narrative.
Careful editing before submission makes a huge difference. Thoughtful self-editing saves time for volunteer editors and improves the reading experience.
Finally, stories should flow naturally so readers can follow the narrative from beginning to end without confusion. Think of it as designing a well-balanced level in a game. The path should be clear, engaging, and rewarding to explore.
The Benefits for Writers
For writers, this publication offers a chance to share local stories with a global audience.
Many creators observe important developments in their communities but lack a platform capable of reaching readers worldwide. This publication changes that.
Writers gain exposure to an international audience, build credibility as thoughtful observers, and connect with other creators across cultures and disciplines.
In time, local storytellers can become trusted voices whose insights travel far beyond their regions.
The Benefits for Readers
For readers, the publication becomes a window into the real experiences of communities around the world.
Instead of distant summaries, they encounter voices from people who live through the events they describe.
Readers discover how different communities approach challenges, celebrate traditions, and create solutions.
The result is something special which is a living documentary of our world.
Ready to Join the Story?
In gaming terms, the map is now open. Writers from every region are invited to log in and share what is happening in their communities.
Whether you are documenting cultural traditions, social innovation, environmental changes, or everyday human stories, your perspective matters. Because sometimes the most powerful stories are not the loudest headlines.
They are the silent moments that reveal how people live, learn, and build their communities. And those are exactly the stories we want to share in this special publication.
Game on!
We will soon commission this publication to compile local news and documentaries globally so stay tuned. It is called ILLUMINATION Local News and Documentary. Dr Yildiz wrote a story about it last weekend.
