I spent decades building a “visible” legacy. Then I realized that “Intentionality” starts where the spreadsheets end.

In The Little Prince, the Fox tells us: “What is essential is invisible to the eye.”
When you are working, your value is highly visible. Your title, your salary, and your production are all measurable. But in retirement, those metrics vanish overnight. If you haven’t built an “Invisible Portfolio,” you will feel bankrupt within six months, regardless of how many zeros are in your bank account.
In my upcoming book, Intentional Retirement, I argue that the greatest risk to your future isn’t market volatility—it’s Relational and Purposeful Volatility.
The “Taming” of a New Life
The Fox explains that to “tame” something is to create ties. In your career, your ties were often created for you by your job description. In retirement, you have to create them by hand.
This is the “essential” work that is invisible to the eye:
- The “Waste” of Time: It’s the hours spent volunteering for a local cause where you aren’t the “boss,” but just a helping hand.
- The Depth of Presence: It’s finally being able to look at your spouse or your community without a “to-do” list running in the back of your mind.
- The Magic of the Moment: It’s realizing that a Tuesday morning in the Arizona mountains is worth more than a decade of “Power Mondays” if you are actually there to see it.
Why “Intentional” is the Only Way to Retire
Most people accidentally find their way into retirement. They stop working and wait for the happiness to start. But happiness is a byproduct of Intentionality.
In Intentional Retirement, we explore how to pivot from a life of achievement to a life of resonance. We look at how to apply the Fox’s secret to your daily routine:
- Auditing Your Invisible Assets: Do you have a sense of purpose that doesn’t require a business card?
- The Art of Taming: How are you reinvesting the 40+ hours a week you just got back into the people who matter most?
- Seeing with the Heart: How do you find the “Magic in the Moment” when the external world is no longer applauding your every move?
The Truth About the “Third Act”
The most beautiful parts of your retirement will never show up on a financial statement. They are the moments of quiet integrity, the deep connections with your community, and the peace of knowing that your value was never tied to your output.
Don’t spend your life building a garden of 5,000 roses only to realize you never “tamed” a single one.
The secret is simple, but it requires a radical shift. It’s time to stop looking at retirement with your eyes and start seeing it with your heart. That is where real life begins.
I’m currently putting the finishing touches on Intentional Retirement. If you’ve ever felt the “invisible” pull toward something more meaningful than just “stopping work,” I’d love to hear your story in the comments.
