Who is JD Pernoste?

JD Pernoste received his PhD in Neuroscience and Immunology in the early 1990’s spending much of his career studying debilitating and/or life-threatening diseases (like Multiple Sclerosis, Type I Diabetes, Arthritis, Crohn’s Disease, Liver disease, and Cancer, among others) over the next thirty years across a few academic, pharmaceutical, biotech, and life sciences organizations.

Now a self proclaimed “Everything-ologist” (albeit tongue-in-cheek), he has become an accomplished and well published researcher, inventor, and scientific guru among many scientists within his realm of expertise.

But Pernoste straddles the line between four profound worlds of science, spirituality, writing and art which is why he writes under the pen name “Pernoste”. Living in multiple worlds is not a new thing for Pernoste, whose academic pursuits in graduate school were balanced with writing humorous and satirical epic poems, based on Greek Mythology. A way to balance a fiercely active left brain with some right-brain whimsy, he always claims.

His lifelong interest in art has also always been important to him, even in his scientific research, encouraging him to create beautiful illustrations and biological diagrams, some of which have graced the covers of several academic journals and been an important part of his scientific presentations at conferences. In his spare time, he creates artwork to go with his written stories and poems, using bits and pieces of photographs, free-access images, and hand drawings. He blends them together with various graphics programs to create scenes or images that resonate with the heart of his writing.

The marriage of science and art, philosophy and writing, is an important part of Pernoste, whose creative endeavors range from philosophical discussions, to spiritual explorations, to whimsical, clever or heart-breaking stories and poetry. He feels it is important to capture small stories or slices of a meaninful moment with his poetry, and capture deeper philosophical concepts in his longer verse stories or prose fiction. Pernoste also includes narration and background music for most of his pieces, painstaking searching for the right background music to suit the mood of each poem (and sometimes fiction).

You will see that many of Pernoste’s writing have been in collaboration with a profound kindred spirit — Anneliese (Annie) Dahl, whose partnership has catalyzed amazing variety and heart in their creative journey. Despite a generational difference between Annie and Pernoste,their collaborations have created amazing synergies and a deep friendship, that has culminated in 100’s of poems and stories as well as a critically acclaimed (if not well read) published verse novel, In the Minuses, a dystopian spiritual science fiction novel.
