How to Use the Australian Freelancer Tax Calculator
Designed by Aiden MC and Dr Mike Broadly for Digitalmehmet Content Ecosystem as a community giveback activity.
Dear subcribers,
Welcome. We believe this small tool we created for you can be helpful. Although we created this tool for freelance writers any professional from Australia can use it. As we are Australian we don’t know other countries tax rules but we asked our community members to use our code to customize it for other countries like the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Singapore, and other countries most visiting our community site.
What This Calculator Does
This calculator helps Australian freelancers, contractors, and sole traders estimate:
- Their taxable income
- Likely income tax owed
- The Medicare levy
- Any expected HELP/HECS student loan repayments
- Estimated net income after tax
It is designed as a practical guide and education tool. It uses current Australian tax brackets (2025–26), but you should always verify with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for your unique circumstances.

How Your Tax Is Calculated
- Taxable Income = (Gross Income + Other Income) – (Deductions + Super + Donations)
- The calculator applies the official ATO individual tax brackets for 2025–26:
- [$0 – $18,200] Nil
- [$18,201 – $45,000] 16c per $1 over $18,200
- [$45,001 – $135,000] $4,288 plus 30c per $1 over $45,000
- [$135,001 – $190,000] $31,288 plus 37c per $1 over $135,000
- [$190,001+] $51,638 plus 45c per $1 over $190,000
(ATO: Individual income tax rates)
- Medicare Levy: 2% of taxable income (some low-income thresholds may reduce this).
- HELP/HECS Repayments: Applied if your taxable income exceeds the annual threshold.
(ATO: HELP thresholds and rates)
GST Note
If you are registered for GST:
- You must collect 10% GST on your Australian sales/invoices.
- Lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS) and pay net GST to the ATO.
- GST is not included in your personal tax; it is a separate process.
