I’m a metaphorical fireman. No, not that kind of fireman in real life. I don’t save lives but I save troubled startups.
Businesses call me in panic when they see fire everywhere: in their team, in their project, in their relationship with their customer.
So here I am, facing all the mess. And I must save all that I can.
How do I save them?
No Judgment
In a startup, decisions have to be made at every.single.moment.
The tools.
The team.
The processes.
The budget.
The investors.
The customers.
Some decisions are going to be good. And, unfortunately, some are going to be bad. Like, real bad.
Some bad decisions can have a drastic (and lasting) impact on your business.
But who am I to judge? I mess up too.
Some decisions seem rational at the moment they’re made, but things change. And, all of a sudden, the decision you were proud of appear to be the stupidest mistake you could make.
So my role is to assess the situation. The present. The past is important of course. I gain valuable insights by understanding why some decisions were made, or why some projects were managed this way.
Was it a lack or resources (human, or financial)? A lack of knowledge in the team? Were you following the trend?
The answer to that will tell me how to deal with the situation.
But in the end, it all comes down to the same problem:
Understand Startups Tech Fundamentals
I know it’s hard. That, as a founder, you have a lot to deal with, and a lot to think about.
I know tech can be overwhelming. But you HAVE to understand the fundamentals.
I’m not talking about being able to code the new Netflix, or to replace Will Grannis (Google’s CTO).
I’m talking about thinking about an efficient tech roadmap. Knowing of to pick up the right tools, for short, mid and long term.
Understanding what infrastucture fits your situation best, admitting that, sooner or later you’ll face a cyberthreat and what you can (must?) do about it.
Knowing tech fundamentals will save you time, frustration, and money.
It will put you ahead of your competition.

A few years ago, a startup call me to the rescue. The team was falling apart, the project was going nowhere, and the customers were angry to say the least.
They made many bad decisions, right from the start. A lot of them could have been avoided, if only they knew the fundamentals of Tech for startups.
