4 Steps to Take Calculated Risk

Based on a conceptual mindset model by Dr Mehmet Yildiz

What once felt like a monumental risk — starting a business, pursuing a passion, taking a leadership role — became second nature to me. I no longer see risk as an obstacle; instead, it is an opportunity to grow, create, and thrive. This mindset shift didn’t happen overnight, but with deliberate practice, it allowed me to live in abundance with the creativity and productivity I desired for better outcomes.

By taking risks in your comfort zone, you can open yourself up to new possibilities and operate in a stretch zone with comfort. You will find that success, happiness, and personal fulfillment are not a result of avoiding risk but of embracing it and allowing it to transform you.

Between comfort and risk-taking, the stretch zone will allow you to use your RAS (reticular activating system) at its full capacity, enabling you to achieve your dreams effortlessly.

The comfort zone may feel safe, but true growth happens in the risk zone, which can later turn into the stretch zone. You can make the risk zone your new routine by rewiring your brain through consistent, calculated challenges.

Step 1: Learn to see uncertainty not as a threat but as an opportunity. Every moment of doubt or hesitation is a chance for growth. The brain may resist at first, but with practice, it adapts.

Step 2: Just as I ease into risk-taking with incremental steps, you can, too, start with small, manageable challenges. Over time, your mind will acclimate to new experiences, and you will find it easier to tackle bigger risks.

Step 3: Don’t dive headlong into dangerous situations, which I call danger zones. Instead, assess the risks and rewards thoughtfully. The key is consistency — repeated exposure to risk rewires the brain, making the unfamiliar feel familiar.

Step 4: The brain is adaptable throughout our lifespan. You can rewire your neural networks by challenging them regularly with small changes to gain new habits and to make you more equipped to handle unknown situations.
