The Uncertain Future of .io Domains—What You Need to Know

white switch hub turned on. .io domains

If you’re running a tech startup, gaming platform, or even a SaaS service on .io domains, may I have your attention please?

You may have missed it, but recent geopolitical changes might give you headaches in the future.

The United Kingdom has recently transferred sovereignty of the Chagos Islands (also known as the British Indian Ocean Territory, or BIOT) to Mauritius.

What’s with me and my startup, you say?

Well, the .io domain extension (despite its closeness from “input/output) is based on the country code for the British Indian Ocean Territory: IO.

With the BIOT now leaving the map, the same could happen to its associated domain.

So, should you be worried about your beloved .io domain?

.io Domains: Are They in Danger?

Thankfully, not yet!

The process of phasing out a country-specific domain takes time, and domain extensions don’t just disappear without warning.

And, there’s a possibility that ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), whch regulates domain names globally, could make an exception: the .io extension is really popular in the tech and gaming worlds, some finance is at stake.

However, while .io domains are safe for now, you should be preparing now for a future where they might no longer be supported. Better be safe than sorry!

What Can You Do Now?

Even if an immediate shutdown of .io domains isn’t likely, being proactive is always a good strategy. Here are a few steps to safeguard your business:

  1. Secure an Alternative Domain
If you’re using a .io domain, it’s wise to secure a backup domain (e.g., .com, .co, or another relevant extension). Domain squatters could quickly grab alternative domains related to your brand, so act fast.
  2. Plan Your Migration
It’s always good to begin considering a migration plan when such news arise. How would you update your website’s links, email services, and other technical setups tied to your .io domain?
  3. Stay Updated on Domain News
Keep an eye on ICANN and domain governance developments. If any decisions are made regarding .io domains, you’ll want to be the first to know. This will give you the advantage of early preparation if a significant change occurs.

Wrapping Up
The future of .io domains is still uncertain, but there’s no need to panic just yet.

Plan in advance, secure an alternative domain, keep yourself informed, and your online presence should remain stable regardless of what happens.

For now, take a deep breath and consider how your business might adapt if the time comes to say goodbye to .io. Being prepared is always the best move.
