Quora Dropped a Bombshell!

What Is Happening to Quora Spaces?

Two Important Products for Content Creators, Curators, Marketers, and Readers Will Be Cancelled in November 2024

Summary: Quora is closing two popular product lines. Will this be the end of Quora? From multiple angles, I offer perspectives as a seasoned content strategist and Quora space owner. This update could mark either the end of Quora as we know it or signal the beginning of a new era for the platform’s growth. Only time will tell. As creators and content curators, we will never know what will happen to content hosting and distribution platforms.

Can This Be the End of Quora?

As a space owner, editor, content curator, writer, avid reader, and passionate community builder who has invested personal time engaging with Quora’s vibrant community, I found the recent changes to the platform concerning and disappointing.

These changes made me emotional yesterday as Quora has been a hub for knowledge-sharing, curiosity, and connection. Here, I have built a writing/reading community and found both inspiration and fulfillment. Therefore, I decided to write this tribute to the Quora spaces today.

I created multiple Quora Spaces in 2021 for the contributors of my publications on Medium, where they can share their story links for visibility. Last July, I wrote an inspiring story to encourage writers to join and benefit from multiple service offerings from Quora. My goal was to help writers to generate new income streams from their content.

As a community builder, one of the most successful spaces I created recently was the Substack Mastery community of Illumination writers and readers, which attracted 17K followers, 352 contributors, and 50+ Administrators and moderators.

Goodbye Quora Spaces

Yet, as of November 2024, Quora is sunsetting two key monetization programs: Space Subscriptions and Ads Revenue Sharing. These changes signal a new era for content creators and marketers, and they bring a mix of uncertainty, nostalgia, and hope for what comes next.

Here is the link to the official announcement by Quora, which was published yesterday. Some content strategists speculate that these changes could mark the beginning of the end for Quora, as they may have significant ramifications for a platform that appears to have lost its productivity and profitability.

However, some optimists, myself included, believe that Quora may be formulating a new strategy and could regain a competitive edge in the digital space. Who knows? I remain hopeful that this might be just the beginning of a fresh approach.

Considering the news, I will miss Quora Spaces for many reasons, but more than anything, the sense of community and connection they cultivated leaves me feeling nostalgic. These forums allowed me to broaden my reach and build credibility in ways that few platforms allow.

Spaces were where people with shared interests—experts, enthusiasts, and curious minds—came together to have meaningful conversations. They gave me a place to extend beyond the typical Q&A format, letting me connect deeply with readers and writers whom I might not have encountered otherwise.

I remember the joy of sharing an idea in my Spaces and seeing it take off, driving traffic to my work that I wouldn’t have gained otherwise. The diversity of the audience was astonishing — Quora brought me readers who might have never come across my stories on Medium or Substack, and that cross-promotion gave my writing wings.

It was the feedback loop that enriched my work. I loved seeing comments and insights that pushed me to rethink and refine my content, creating a dialogue that felt alive and constantly evolving.

Quora Spaces also became my networking spot, where I met collaborators and connected with like-minded thought leaders. These relationships, built over the years, were not transactional as they contributed to my growth as a writer, editor, and content curator.

In a way, Spaces felt like a home for my ideas and had a life beyond the boundaries of one site. I have participated in many niche spaces since their inception. Losing these spaces feels like the end of an era, but I’ll always cherish the community it helped me build. I’ll miss these bonds and this sense of belonging the most.

As I think back on my community-building journey with Quora, I feel nostalgic for the platform’s early days. When I first joined, it was out of pure curiosity — a love for knowledge and the idea of being part of a collective intellectual space.

Over time, I became more involved, from writing my answers to managing spaces, curating content for avid readers, and connecting with like-minded creators across the globe.

Monetization was never my primary goal, but it became a welcome recognition of the value I was contributing to the platform.

The financial support helped creators allocate time to creating meaningful content, engaging deeply with their audience, and growing the community. Now, with these opportunities fading away, I wonder what lies ahead, not just for writers but for all of us who have built a community on Quora.

Will This Be a Loss for Creators and Community Builders?

The announcement hit hard for those of us who have been nurturing spaces on Quora. Over the years, Quora has become more than just a question-and-answer platform. It has grown into a space where we have cultivated a community, curated valuable content, and, yes, even monetized our expertise.

The Space Subscriptions program allowed space owners to offer exclusive content to dedicated followers, while Ads Revenue Sharing provided another layer of support for our efforts.

For many creators, these programs were more than just income streams — they represented recognition for the time and energy we poured into Quora. And now, they are being discontinued.

This decision leaves me and countless others at a crossroads. Do we continue pouring our hearts into these spaces out of passion alone, or do we seek new platforms that value our contributions in ways that allow for financial sustainability?

The Quora+ program remains, offering creators a way to monetize their content. While this seems like a logical next step for those looking to continue providing paywalled content, it raises important questions.

Quora+ is a broader subscription service — subscribers get access to various content from one space and the entire platform. This means that space creators’ unique relationship with their dedicated followers might be diluted.

Content, once curated for a specific audience, could become part of a more general pool, losing its personal touch. This shift is significant for those who have invested years in building a specific community.

Will our followers transition to Quora+?

Will they continue to engage with the content we create?

Or will this change lead them elsewhere, leaving behind the tightly-knit community creators worked so hard to cultivate?

We don’t know the answers to these questions yet and will find out as we engage on this uncertain platform. Some believe that Quora might not continue business as its profitability is questionable.

What Can We Do?

As a content creator, space owner, and editor, I feel that this transition calls for reevaluating our strategy. It is time to think about how we can continue to engage with our audience meaningfully — whether on Quora+ or through other platforms.

Here are some thoughts and encourage others to think about them as well:

Diversify Your Content on Multiple Platforms: Relying solely on one platform for content distribution and monetization is risky. Now might be the time to explore alternatives like Substack, Medium, or even launching independent websites.

Strengthen Community Bonds: The end of monetization programs doesn’t mean the end of our spaces. We can still engage with our audience by offering free content, running Q&As, or creating exclusive discussion groups.

Explore Quora+ Carefully: For those continuing with Quora+, it is necessary to understand how our content will be positioned within the broader ecosystem. Will it still retain the unique touch that attracted followers in the first place? This is something we will need to monitor closely.

Accept and Embrace Change: While losing familiar programs is difficult, change is inevitable in the digital world. It is important to remain adaptable, open to new opportunities, and continue to evolve alongside the platforms we use.

Conclusions and Key Takeaways

Quora has been a significant part of my content curation journey, and I am grateful for the opportunities it has given me to share knowledge and build a community.

While the changes in monetization may feel like a setback for content creators, curators, marketers, and community builders, they can also be an opportunity for growth.

As a long-time user, I will continue to engage, create, and connect, managing this new landscape with the same curiosity and passion that brought me to Quora in the first place.

But, as we look ahead, it is time for creators, readers, and community builders to reflect on what these changes mean for us and how we can continue to create valuable, impactful content in this evolving digital space.
