Boosting Mitochondrial Health: How to Tame Chronic Inflammation with DAMPs Know-How

Exploring Mitochondrial Damage Signals and Practical Steps to Reduce Inflammation for Optimal Cellular Health

I talk a lot about Mitochondria, as they matter. Every cell needs them, and their dysfunction is associated with all metabolic diseases, cancers, and neurodegenerative disorders. They are extra critical for energy organs like the brain and the heart. So, if our mitochondria malfunction, we will be in imminent systemic trouble.

Mitochondria, the energy powerhouse of our cells, is vital to our health. Besides using electrons from food to create ATP molecules, mitochondria can turn genes on and off. They can trigger metabolic reprogramming of the cell and might generate inflammation when dysfunctional.

Due to their physiological roles in the body, dysfunction of mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA can cause severe health conditions impacting the body’s homeostasis and causing disorders.

The common mitochondrial issues in the literature are irregular mitochondrial morphology, like abnormal mitochondrial dynamics, and increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production, causing inflammation. These concepts are related to damaged mitochondria.

In this story, I want to highlight the role of mitochondria in creating inflammation in cells. For example, dysfunctional mitochondria can lead to an overproduction of reactive oxygen species and the release of pro-inflammatory molecules, initiating and sustaining inflammatory responses through the immune system.

Inflammation is a complex biological response triggered by the immune system in response to harmful stimuli, like pathogens, toxins, metabolic waste products, and tissue injury. Acute and timely inflammation is necessary for healing and protection.

However, excessive or chronic inflammation is toxic to the body and might contribute to severe health conditions, like autoimmune disorders, cardiometabolic diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.

As documented in the Journal of Neuroscience, “maintaining healthy mitochondria is crucial in cells and neurons in the brain, with high metabolic demands. Dysfunctional mitochondria are thought to be selectively degraded.” The good news is that improving mitochondrial health might lower mitochondrial inflammation, which I cover in this article.

The Meaning of Mitochondrial DAMPs

DAMPs (Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns) are particular molecules released and exposed by damaged or dying cells due to injury, infection, or other stressors like metabolic stress or toxins in the body.

Mitochondrial DAMPs are molecules that damage or stress cells release, acting as alarm signals to alert the immune system. When cells get hurt — due to injury, infection, or other stresses — they release DAMPs, which the immune system detects.

This triggers inflammation and recruits immune cells to help repair the damage. Mitochondrial DAMPs, specifically, are parts of the mitochondria like mitochondrial DNA or proteins that, when released, can amplify immune responses and inflammation. For a deeper dive, see Mitochondrial Control of Inflammation in Nature.

The bottom line is that dysfunctional mitochondria can lead to abnormal inflammasome activation, causing chronic inflammation.

Practical Tips to Lower Inflammation By Supporting Mitochondria

1 — Boost Mitochondrial Health: Regular exercise, restorative sleep, and nutritious food support healthy mitochondria, helping eliminate weak ones and create fresh, stronger ones.

2 — Protect Mitochondrial DNA: Lowering oxidative stress through lifestyle changes and supplements like CoQ10, PQQ, and NAC can prevent DNA damage and inflammation. We also need to avoid environmental toxins, cigarette smoke, excessive alcohol, and harmful drugs.

3 — Balance the Inflammasome: Reducing inflammation pathways with anti-inflammatory habits, diets, and certain medications can improve mitochondrial function.

4 — Initiate Mitophagy: This self-cleaning process removes damaged mitochondria, promoting cellular repair. Mitophagy is the use of autophagy to remove dysfunctional mitochondria.

5 — Enhance Mitochondrial Uncoupling: This natural process, stimulated by signals from diet, hormones, and even cold, creates new mitochondria, improving energy and potentially extending lifespan. I documented six steps to improve mitochondrial uncoupling in a previous article. Enhancing mitochondrial uncoupling via mitogenesis might improve cellular health and enhance lifespan.

It is possible to discard damaged and weak mitochondria and allow the creation of fresh ones, which can energize our cells. To this end, I provided 12 tips to gain denser mitochondria in a previous article.

Conclusions and Key Takeaways

Mitochondria are more than cellular engines. They are guardians of our energy and lifelong resilience, especially in power-hungry organs like the brain and heart.

When they falter, energy drops, inflammation rises, and overall health can crumble. Supporting these tiny but powerful structures through balanced, mindful lifestyle choices — quality sleep, nutrient-rich diets, regular exercise, and sun exposure — can significantly boost our vitality.

Initiating natural processes like mitophagy and mitogenesis through healthy lifestyle choices can rejuvenate cellular health. They might not work for everyone, but long-term fasting and following a ketogenic diet sharpened my mind and the body’s energy use.

I invite you to focus on mitochondrial care for a longer, healthier, and happier life. These ancient organelles need to be looked after and refreshed to serve us.
