What’s Happening on Medium Now?

Quick Update on Recent Issues (Medium Copy for responses if you are a writer or reader there)

Hello, dear friends. I am deeply touched by the overwhelming emails and Slack messages I have received from thousands of readers and writers over the last 16 days. I appreciate your concerns; I am well, thank you. It is impossible for me to respond to everyone in a reasonable timeframe, but I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. As I mentioned in my farewell story (seen by only 1% of my followers), I will not write on this platform until the overt payment issues are resolved. There is no update from Medium apart from saying to be patient. The situation did not improve in the last two weeks. However, newer concerns have emerged, as pointed out by my editorial and technical team — over 80% of the stories we curate and publish appear to be flagged as spam, which is deeply concerning. Aiden wrote a heartfelt story about it, and even it seems to be flagged. I will write a detailed article about this and distribute it through Substack. Although a Medium executive claimed they do not use Copyleaks, my gut feeling and initial findings suggest otherwise. I will explain it later, as my findings are shocking. This software is among the worst AI detectors, designed to profit from corporate organizations, and is highly unreliable. For example, yesterday, I tested a chapter of my doctoral thesis from the early 1990s, and it was flagged as 92% AI-written. We tested over 30 such tools 2 years ago and stopped using them as all showed false positives. Now, even worse, some opportunistic writers use new-generation humanizers paying them, resulting in Copyleaks showing 0% AI detection — a clear false negative. This suggests that Medium or other organizations may be publishing AI-generated content unintentionally while flagging genuine work as spam or AI-written, which is heartbreaking. I plan to write an academic paper and an industry white paper on this issue and have them published externally through multiple organizations to create awareness. As creators, we cannot stay silent and tolerate such unethical behavior. It also came to my attention that Scott removed (censored) my honest feedback on his viral story. It is very disappointing. I will cover it in a newsletter on Substack. The platform continues to deteriorate, testing both my optimism and patience. I am considering the possibility of never returning and deleting my account along with all 16 publications, as remaining on a toxic platform may not be wise. Thank you for reading my blog.
