Medium was developed by Evan Williams and launched on 15th August 2012.
Medium is a haven for the writers who want to share their ideas, experiences, thoughts, skills, etc., through writing across the globe. It is mainly popular due to its unique business model.
The Medium Partner Program allows the writer to monetize their writing without any requirements of followers or engagement. Each and every writer can monetize their writing to make money with zero followers.
In August 2024, Medium made a profit for the first time. By late 2024, it also achieved a milestone of about 1 million subscribers.
Revenue range: Estimates suggest Medium’s current revenue is between $50 million and $60 million.
But even after becoming profitable, what happened to the medium that resulted in the dramatic change of earnings? Medium was declining the EPR from November (estimated). In January 2025, we all knew that the EPR almost reached zero. Anyways, I don’t want to discuss it now.
Here’s the reason why the change in EPR occurs—
Changing the Way Writers are Rewarded
Keeping Costs in Check
Adapting to Evolving Content Dynamics
Balancing the Needs of Creators and the Business
According to me, the last one is the key reason for the decrease in EPR. They are looking forward to more and more profit even after generating millions of dollars, as we all know you can’t fulfill the desire for money and power. That’s why Medium decreased the EPR even after becoming a profitable company.
Medium is now not as it was. Let’s see if they think to increase the EPR. We will find the answer within 2 months.
In the end I will say, Medium will die soon if they really don’t show any improvement in EPR. The media should take action before it’s too late.
The process of dying is already beginning—top writers are leaving the platform. Medium will soon realize when their data capacity gets saturated with the inactive account.
