The Reason We Crave Anonymity: It’s About Identity and Social Judgment
We want to escape the “gaze” of others and go someplace where there is anonymity. Maybe to start afresh or for other reasons also.
Many do this by travelling or moving abroad. They want to go to places where others don’t know them, where there are no prejudgments. This is more common than people realise, and I’ve known people who do this, and I’ve even done it myself. To some extent, it can be said that most people who travel and live away have a hidden desire to reinvent themselves, even if unconscious. Having lived abroad for almost 20 years, I can testify to that.
But we also carry ourselves everywhere we go, and simply living in a different culture and country doesn’t free us from social judgment; it may increase it, depending on where we travel to and the environment. Let’s look a bit closer at this.
