This question has been popping up in my mind since very long. However, today, I sat in silence and navigated my mind through all the up and downs I have had since becoming a mother.
Motherhood is a beautiful blessing. The role of a mother is a remarkable one. But, one does goes through lots of shifts when they take on this heavy role.
Identity Shift:
The identity shift, according to me, is that you begin to question your own self-existence, your own self-worth.
Like, this was one of the symptoms of my struggle with postpartum depression and it lasted longer than the depression itself.
Identity Crisis makes you ask yourself various questions, for example,
- Why do I miss the older version of myself?
- Why do I feel the need to be reassured everytime that I am still the same?
- Why have I lost all confidence?
These questions can be pretty painful; I myself face them often.
There are many reasons why one feels this way. Some of which are,
- Being tired and exhausted while taking care of kids all day.
- Burnout is something serious that many moms dont realize they are facing.
- Not getting proper care after birth.
- Certain deficiencies. Many women become iron-deficient after giving birth.
- Cant take time out for self care and self love.
These are just few of many reasons that make women feel the way they do when they suffer from identity crisis after having kids.
My purpose of sharing this with you all is to remind you of the fact that, yes, motherhood can be tiring and very exhausting. It can surely make one question their identity. But, the sweetness of being a mother can surpass anything. We just have to take care of ourselves and be kind to ourselves. Because one can’t pour from an empty cup.
