Biography of A. K. Girisam
Retired Chief Marine Engineer | Former Head of Department | Humorist, Author, & Nostalgic Storyteller
A. K. Girisam is a retired Merchant Navy Chief Engineer, educator, and author who spent decades navigating the high seas before bringing his rich, humorous, and adventurous experiences to the literary world. Born into an upper-middle-class family in India as the son of a Divisional Engineer in Telephones, he graduated in Mechanical-Marine Engineering and embarked on a dynamic maritime career driven by a lifelong passion for ocean voyages, global cultures, and ever-changing horizons.
After decades of managing complex shipboard engines and traversing international waters, Girisam transitioned into maritime education, serving as the Head of Department at a maritime training college. Today, having stepped back from both active sailing and academic lecturing, he devotes his time to writing, reading, traveling across Germany and Canada to visit his children and grandchildren, and maintaining an active lifestyle through cycling, yoga, and 10,000 daily steps.
A Heritage of Humor and Literary Courage
Writing and storytelling run deep in Girisam’s lineage. He is the great-great-grandson of the legendary Telugu literary figure Gurajada Appa Rao, whose iconic stage play Kanya Sulkam revolutionized a part of South India’s society by single-handedly challenging and abolishing the evil social practice of child girl marriage. Inheriting a distinct strand of his ancestor’s sharp, self-deprecating wit, Girisam’s writing focuses on human quirks, nostalgic childhood reminiscences, and high-seas misadventures—all told without long-winded preachiness, letting the truth of human nature shine through laughter.
As an author, Girisam has published three books detailing his college days, seafaring adventures, and post-retirement observations, including his celebrated work Merry Mariner. His stories have also been featured in multiple literary anthologies.
Writing Style & Philosophy
Girisam writes primarily for readers who cherish authentic storytelling, nostalgic warmth, and light-hearted humor. He believes that true positive change in people comes not from clinical lectures or seminars, but from stories that touch the heart and tickle the funny bone.
As a writer across platforms like Medium and Substack, and as the editor of New Literary Society, he bridges the gap between technical maritime realism and warm, humanistic comedy.
