In Charmaine Wilkerson’s Black Cake, a mother’s death sends two estranged siblings into a family history shaped by secrets, survival, migration, identity, and the lives their parents never fully revealed. Authors Scarlet Ibis James and Amanda Coreishy came together to discuss Wilkerson’s multigenerational novel, from Covey and Eleanor to Benny, Byron, sisterhood, Caribbean history, parent-child relationships, and the question that kept surfacing throughout their conversation: What are you willing to do? The discussion began with a birthday gift and a promise to read the book together, then became a spirited exchange between two authors who loved the novel but did not always agree on its characters, choices, or conclusions.
