Curator’s Note: In marriage, maintaining the initial spark requires ongoing effort amidst life’s demands. The author shares strategies for keeping the romance alive, such as giving sincere compliments, allowing each partner to take the lead in decision-making, and prioritizing personal growth. Supporting each other’s passions is vital, with the couple coordinating healthy meals and personal time. They also emphasize the importance of late-night conversations to connect deeply. Through challenges, including postpartum depression, the husband’s unwavering support reinforces their bond. Ultimately, it’s about mutual dedication and effort that keeps the spark alive, making the relationship enjoyable and fulfilling over time.

When you first get married, the feeling of “spark” comes naturally. And, with time, in the midst of work, kids, and household chores, this seems forgotten. But this should not be the case. You can always cultivate it along this journey of togetherness.

Here is how my husband and I keep this feeling alive and running.

  • Never Shy Away from giving Compliments: I always make sure I compliment my husband on the tiniest of things/gestures/actions. This can make the man truly special and vice versa.
  • Give each other the Lead: When i think its my husband’s part of the job, I take a step back and let him pave the way for us. He likes one short sentence that I often say whenever we are going to make an important decision, for example, which car to buy? I say, It is your call! He has also once told me how motivated he feels by this statement. He feels very confident in the decision he is going to take knowing his wife puts utmost trust in him.
  • Keep Grooming yourself Physically, Mentally, and Spiritually: This requires a lot of dedication. And when two people dedicate themselves for each other. The spark keeps igniting with full force.
  • Support each others Personal Passions: My husband is eats very healthy so I make sure I make such meals for him that are not only healthy but also delicious. Same way , he fulfils my wishes to eat burgers on weekends. Also, whenever I want to go for a walk. He offers to take care of the kids so that I can have some personal time and I do the same when he wants to go out with his friends.
  • Late night deep conversations: After we put our kids to bed, we make sure we spend some quality time every night. We indulge in thoughtful conversations from asking about how our day went to how we want our next 5 years to be like?
  • In Sickness and in Health! : As most of you know how bad postpartum depression hits me every time. It has happened twice and both the times my husband has been the biggest support. His never-giving-up ideology keeps me going in life.

Spark in your marriage makes it fun and worth sacrificing everything for. It requires effort from both parties, not just one. I know how much I give for this relationship, and I know it’s been reciprocated wonderfully, and this is what keeps the spark alive in the long term.
