Good writing is not simply you are born with. It is a skill that you develop through reading, practicing and observing. Of course, you are going to make lots of mistakes along the way but you are going to learn more than you made mistakes.
If you want to master your writing, start with these few habits:
- READ, READ, AND READ: Start reading blogs, newspapers, even stories here on Medium to understand and learn how writers develop certain ideas and showcase their talent by creating a masterpiece. Read as a writer and analyse all their work, compare and see where you can improve.
- Write Regularly: Once you start to to write regularly, you will begin to notice your natural style, pattern, and weaknesses. I am not saying to write thousands of words daily but you should be consistent with what you writing about.
- Develop Your Own Voice: Your own style, personality, the way you write, the way you perceive views and opinions will make your writing yours. Do not try to be your favourite writer. You should learn from them but you should follow your own natural way of creating content.
- Donโt Be Shy to Edit Your Work: Editing is part of writing. Once you have finished, ask yourself this question, โHow can I perfect it even more?โ Your first draft wont be perfect but if you read your work again and again you will be able to bring changes which will be fuirtful for your final draft.
- Donโt Be Afraid of Bad Writing: Almost everyone starts their journey with not too perfect sentences and many unfinished drafts. But this does not mean you wait till you hit perfection. Start Now.
- Keep Going Even When The Motivation Disappears: Sometimes one does not feel the motivation to write but this does not mean you have lost the passion for writing. Write small paragraphs but continue to write. The goal is not to feel inspired everyday. The goal is to keep your relationship with writing alive.
So donโt wait up till you feel like a โreal writerโ.
You make the initiative and let your skills follow along the way.
