Nothing Can Melt the Heat of a Passion

When reality falls apart, Dalí’s imperfection remains.

Curator’s Note: In a surreal landscape reflecting Salvador Dalí’s artistic vision, the author experiences a harsh and disorienting desert environment that merges reality with imagination. As she encounters iconic imagery from Dalí’s paintings, such as kneeling saints and melting clocks, elements of the unconscious mind come alive, challenging perceptions of time and existence. The heat blurs the line between reality and imagination, evoking themes of memory, passion, and time’s fleeting nature. Ultimately, though the surreal scene dissolves, the enduring power of love and memory remains, signifying what truly persists amid change.

Summer had not even arrived yet when a scorching wind swept through the Universe.

It was no ordinary wind.

It did not make the leaves on the trees sway, nor did it send dust swirling along the roads.

It was a heat that seemed to come from somewhere much farther away, as if the Sun itself had decided to come too close to Earth.

There was no trace of coolness anywhere across the Earth’s crust.

The air was utterly still.

The shadows no longer offered relief.

Even the horizon trembled, as though it were tired of remaining in the same place.

The Temptation of Saint Anthony — Painting by Dalí

That was when, walking across the searing ground, I saw a surreal scene.

A saint was kneeling in the sand, holding a cross.

I stood there for a few seconds, simply taking it in.

Was my vision playing tricks on me, or was my lens complaining about the lack of moisture?

I stepped closer.

The man appeared to be praying.

Before him, the desert stretched as far as the eye could see.

But there was something strange about the landscape.

Very strange.

Enormous animals were walking toward the saint.

Elephants.

Horses.

Ridiculously long legs supporting bodies that defied the laws of nature.

That was when I recognized the scene.

It was Salvador Dalí.

Or rather…

It was one of Dalí’s paintings that, on that particular day, seemed to have escaped from the canvas.

I looked at the saint again.

Perhaps he, too, was suffering from the heat.

Perhaps he was praying for all of this to end.

Swans Reflecting Elephants — Painting by Dalí

I kept walking.

The desert seemed endless.

At some point, the landscape began to change before my eyes.

Swans appeared on the water.

But when I paused over their reflections, I saw elephants.

I stopped.

Swans.

Elephants.

That was when I realized that, in that place, it was impossible to trust even mirrors.

And, not knowing whether I was paranoid or delirious, I realized one thing… I was inside yet another bizarre work by Dalí.

Perhaps that was what the heat was doing: melting not only things, but also the boundary between what existed and what we imagined existed.

Do Not Fear Imperfection

I looked up.

The cosmic fabric began to darken.

For a moment, I thought rain might finally come.

But no.

What appeared was a face.

A distorted, strange face, almost asleep, lost among nightmares.

It was as though Dalí’s own universe had opened up before me — a place where dreams did not ask permission before entering reality.

There, anything was possible.

Even the impossible.

And perhaps that was precisely the greatest provocation of that man with the exaggerated mustache.

Dalí did not seem interested in painting the world as our limited eyes perceived it.

He wanted to paint what existed behind our eyes.

Dreams.

Fears.

Desires.

Obsessions.

The unconscious.

And that day, I was beginning to understand.

I wandered between what I believed to be real and what belonged to the imagination.

I saw double images.

Or was that what truly existed, and we simply could not see it?

Was it an optical illusion, or had the heat opened a passage?

And on the other side lay the universe where Dalí’s canvases seemed to come alive.

The Persistence of Memory — Painting by Dalí

I noticed something falling from the tree.

I thought it was a fruit.

But it was a clock.

A soft clock.

Melted.

It hung from a branch, misshapen, as though it had lost its rigidity.

I stepped closer.

Another lay on a surface.

Another slowly spilled over the edge.

I stared at them.

None of them seemed concerned about time.

And then I recognized the strokes.

Absurd. Intriguing.

And perhaps disturbing as well.

Because those melted clocks were saying, in a strange and silent way, something we spend a lifetime trying to forget:

time is not as solid as we imagine.

It passes.

It disappears.

Clocks give shape to the hours, but we are the ones who invented that measure.

We are the ones who need them — clocks that pretend to obey what we cannot control.

As I watched those soft, melting clocks, I thought about how many things had already passed through my life.

People.

Places.

Conversations.

Hugs.

Days that seemed endless and that, years later, could fit inside a single memory.

Everything had passed.

Everything except memory.

Love Remains

Then, as happens with every mirage when the heat becomes too intense, the surreal scene began to dissolve before my eyes.

The desert evaporated.

The elephants vanished.

The clocks began to dissolve, blending into the colors: yellow, blue, red…

Even the saint merged with the light.

In the blank space, a woman appeared.

Gala.

Perhaps none of Dalí’s images remained as vivid as she did.

She was his companion, his desire, his obsession and, in a way, an inseparable part of his artistic language.

For decades, she was present in his life and in his work.

Dalí transformed her into a muse.

And perhaps he also transformed passion itself into raw material for his art.

If the clocks melted before time, perhaps the whole world could melt before passion.

I watched her as the rest of the landscape faded away.

And in that moment, I understood that there was something even more powerful than the heat of that summer.

The heat of a passion capable of lasting a lifetime.

The last traces of the desert disappeared.

Silence reigned supreme.

I looked at the emptiness one last time.

It was still in motion.

Yet, strangely, I remembered every detail.

Perhaps that was the true secret of that day.

Reality can change its shape.

Even our certainties can disappear.

But some things insist on remaining, and memory is one of them.

Perhaps because time can take almost everything away.

Except what was once truly loved.
