The world begins where fear ends.
Every morning, when she woke, she looked at the door.
It was a simple door, made of weathered wood, at the end of a hallway she had known since childhood.
Her parents had taught her never to open it. After them, other voices repeated the same warning.
“Stay away,” they would say. “There are things on the other side that could hurt you.”
And she believed them.
She grew up in that house learning that some doors were meant to remain closed, that it was better not to ask certain questions, and that curiosity could bring suffering.
And so, the years passed.
She became an adult, but the door remained closed.
Sometimes, she would pass by it more slowly.
Sometimes, she would stop.
She wondered what might be on the other side.
But all it took was remembering the warnings about danger to make her move on.
Until one morning, she noticed something she had never seen before.
A tiny point of light was shining through the wood.
She moved closer.
She stood there for a few moments, simply looking.
Then, slowly, she touched the wood.
It was cold.
She ran her fingers along the surface and found a small crack.
The light was coming through it.
Her heart began to race.
She took hold of the doorknob.
Turned it.
The door opened with a soft creak.
She stood still.
She had always imagined it would be impossible to open.
That it was locked.
Then she saw.
There were no monsters on the other side.
No abysses.
Nothing waiting to destroy her.
There was a new path waiting for her.
There was sky.
There was wind.
There were trees swaying in the distance.
There was the scent of earth after the rain.
There was a different glow.
And there was a vast world before her.
She took one step.
Then another.
And then she realized something that made her look back.
The darkness was not on the other side of the door.
The darkness was inside the house.
And for so many years, she had mistaken protection for imprisonment.
She looked outside again.
This time, she did not ask whether it was safe.
She simply took a deep breath and moved forward.
She did not know where that path would lead her.
There might be stones.
There might be storms.
But there would also be mornings, encounters, discoveries, and horizons she would never have known if she had remained standing still.
And that was how she discovered that some doors do not need to be opened because someone tells us the time has come.
They need to be opened when we realize that fear can no longer be allowed to choose for us.
