What Does It Take to Leave Footprints That Truly Matter?
They say that when someone leaves this world, their soul remains asleep for some time.
And that, afterward, we are taken to exactly the place with which we are most in tune.
And so it happened to a very important being.
After sleeping for centuries, Nero awoke in a dimension far removed from Earth.
Still dressed in his luxurious clothes, he looked around.
He could see nothing but applause, admiration, and fame.
Then, as if an invisible force were guiding him, his spirit was drawn directly to Hollywood, California.
Fascinated by the glamour, he began watching the actors and celebrities.
At first, he was pleased.
After all, he had finally arrived in a place where fame seemed to be a kind of religion.
But he soon noticed something that made him furious.
No one was talking about him.
Worse.
No one could even see him.
Nero decided to do what he had always done in the past.
He took the stage.
He played the lyre.
He sang.
He acted.
He struck poses.
He waited for the applause.
Nothing.
Frustrated, he decided to fall back on his methods.
He locked the theater doors so no one could leave.
But this time, it made no difference.
People simply carried on with their performances.
That was when Nero heard about the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where great artists had their names immortalized.
His heart raced.
What?
They had built a walkway to honor the greats, and no one had remembered him?
He was desperate.
He needed to make his presence known.
So he went there.
He demanded a path through the crowd, threatening to unleash wild beasts upon them.
No one cared.
No one ran.
No one even seemed frightened.
That made him even more irritated.
So he decided to be more audacious.
He ordered his old golden chariot to be brought to him and, with all the pomp he believed he deserved, paraded through the avenues.
He stopped in front of the cameras.
He climbed down slowly.
Adjusted his laurel crown.
Puffed out his chest.
With his ego inflated like a giant balloon, he took a step forward.
And stomped.
He waited.
He looked down.
Nothing.
He took another step.
Nothing.
He began walking back and forth, stomping hard, as if he could force the pavement to acknowledge his importance.
“Make way!” he shouted. “Nero has arrived!”
People kept walking.
But no one recognized him.
He realized something even more terrible.
There was no applause.
No shouting.
No subjects.
No soldiers.
No one kneeling before him.
For the first time in his existence, he was completely alone.
He crouched down and touched one of the stars set into the pavement.
He read the name of an artist.
Then another.
And another.
They had all left a mark.
He had not.
He stood motionless.
Perhaps, for the first time, he felt something resembling fear.
“But I was an emperor…”
No one answered.
“I had an empire!”
Silence.
“I was famous!”
A voice came from behind him.
Nero turned quickly.
An old man was sitting on a bench, watching him.
“Who are you?” he asked.
The man smiled.
“One of those who was devoured in the arena of your circus.”
Nero looked around suspiciously.
“But if you were devoured by lions, you should have died.”
“Exactly. Just like you.”
Nero remained silent for a few seconds.
“Is that why no one can see me?”
The old man shrugged.
“Exactly.”
“So… I’m dead?”
“You have been for some time.”
Nero examined the Walk of Fame again.
For the first time, the stars seemed small.
“And no one put my name here?”
The old man smiled.
“You’re still looking for glory in the wrong place. The handprints and footprints are set in the cement at the Chinese Theatre.”
“So I need to go there and leave my footprints.”
The old man shrugged.
“Some people leave their names written in the ground. Others leave stories.”
“And me?”
The old man stood up.
“You left blood, sorrow, and ashes…”
Nero watched the old man slowly disappear into the light, growing more distant.
Then he looked at his own laurel crown.
At his luxurious clothes.
And he realized the irony.
All his life, he had done everything he could to make the universe remember him.
And yet, in a place where everyone wanted to leave a mark…
he could not leave even a single footprint.
Then he thought:
Perhaps leaving footprints means much more than leaving marks on a pavement.
“I set Rome on fire!”
“Well… they say I did.”
“I became famous for it.”
“Didn’t I?”
He climbed into his golden chariot and soared over Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street.
He continued to believe he was greater than all of it.
And, to him, that was all that mattered.
The Walk of Fame remains where it has always been.
Still fascinating and tempting those who believe that being remembered is the same as leaving a mark.
Without realizing that:
Names fade.
Stars lose their shine.
But our actions are seeds that endure, even after we are gone.
We may be remembered for the harm we caused.
Or for the good we left behind.
Perhaps there is another Walk of Fame.
Not the one where we have our names engraved, but the one we build, step by step, through everything we do to transform people’s lives — and the world — into a better place.
Because, in the end, it is not our signature that remains.
It is what we made bloom.
