Author’s Note:
I recently came across the story of Dr. Mashelkar, and his journey left a lasting impression on me. Life stories of Thomas Alva Edison, Ramanujan, and other legends would inspire teenagers. Hardships and handicaps did not prevent them from achieving phenomenal success.
To receive a single civilian award is a rare honor. To be decorated with all three — the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Vibhushan — puts an individual in an elite realm of Indian history.
When you add 55 honorary doctorates from universities worldwide, 25 published books, over 280 research papers, and the stewardship of 40 national laboratories as the Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), one name stands out: Dr. Raghunath Anant Mashelkar.
Yet, the true measure of Dr. Mashelkar’s greatness lies not in his staggering credentials, but in where his journey began.
For the vandalizing and rampaging youth, his story should be an eye- opener. His story should be taught in schools.
Born into Struggle: The Streetlamp Scholar
Tragedy struck early. Raghunath was just six years old when his father passed away, leaving his mother, Anjani Mashelkar, to raise him alone in Mumbai’s humble chawls. Money was non-existent, and securing two basic meals a day was a constant struggle.
His mother took on grueling manual work, taking in laundry and doing domestic chores to ensure her son could get an education. There were days when they went to bed on empty stomachs, but Anjani’s resolve never wavered: her son had to study.
- Walking Barefoot: Young Raghunath walked barefoot to school until the age of twelve. Shoes were a luxury the family simply could not afford.
- The Streetlamp Desk: Because their tiny room lacked electricity, he spent his evenings studying under the yellow glow of public streetlamps, sitting on the concrete pavement with his textbooks open on his lap.
- The ₹21 Crisis: When the time came to enroll in high school, his mother realized she did not have the admission fee of ₹21. Desperate to keep her son’s dreams alive, she walked from door to door until a kind neighbor lent her the money.
Despite the crushing poverty, Raghunath possessed a razor-sharp mind and an unyielding work ethic. When the Maharashtra State Board SSC examination results were announced, he surprised everyone by ranking 11th across the entire state.
The Turning Point: A Lifeline of ₹60
Even with stellar academic results, his journey almost came to an abrupt halt. Without funds for college fees and textbooks, Raghunath was on the verge of abandoning his studies to look for a low-paying job to support his mother.
Just as hope was fading, a vital lifeline arrived: the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust awarded him a monthly scholarship of ₹60.
That modest sum changed everything. It covered his college fees, bought his textbooks, and allowed him to pursue Chemical Engineering at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai. He went on to complete his PhD with distinction, earning international acclaim for his research in polymer science and transport phenomena. Offers from top foreign universities and multinational corporations soon came pouring in. A comfortable, high-paying career abroad was his for the taking.
Choosing the Motherland: Revolutionizing Indian Science
In 1976, Dr. Mashelkar made a decision that shocked many of his international peers. He walked away from lucrative overseas opportunities and returned to India, joining the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in Pune at a modest monthly salary of ₹2,100.
When he stepped up as Director of NCL in 1989, he inherited an institution steeped in traditional academic habits. In its 39-year history, NCL had not filed or secured a single US patent. Most Indian research institutions at the time were content with reverse-engineering foreign technologies or writing papers that gathered dust in archives.
Dr. Mashelkar envisioned a bold new path: “India must transform from an importer of technology into an exporter of global innovations.”
He instituted a cultural revolution within the scientific community:
- Global Industry Partnerships: Under his leadership, NCL signed historic research and development partnerships with international industrial leaders like General Electric and DuPont, demonstrating that Indian science could meet global corporate standards.
- Patenting Culture: He trained Indian scientists to protect their intellectual property, establishing India as a serious player in global patenting.
- Institutional Autonomy: He streamlined administration across CSIR’s network of 40 laboratories, encouraging scientists to think like entrepreneurs.
Defending India’s Sacred Heritage
Perhaps Dr. Mashelkar’s most famous national contribution occurred on the global legal stage. In the late 1990s, foreign companies began claiming patents in Western countries on traditional Indian knowledge — most notably the healing properties of turmeric and the unique characteristics of basmati rice.
Recognizing this as biopiracy, Dr. Mashelkar led a legal and scientific battle at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Equipped with ancient Sanskrit texts, historic Indian medical journals, and rigorous scientific documentation, his team successfully overturned the US patent granted on turmeric…
