Pippin’s Secret To SUCCESS

I watched the Lord of the Rings when I was a kid. It gave me nightmares. Probably best not to watch it when you’re 6 years old…

That being said, here are my top 2 lessons I learned from the series when I watched it again later in life.

1. The End Does NOT Justify The Means

In the books as well as the movie, Saruman — not Sauron, the eye — decides that the world is changing anyway so he might as well side with the strong. This is the bearded fella who is not played by Ian McKellen. Just kidding, I’m a big fan of Christopher Lee.

He thinks the end will be the same either way so it doesn’t matter what he needs to do as long as he ends up on top in the end. He burns the forests to accelerate the process. If you remember the movie, this does not go well for him…

He tries to do a lot of bad to ensure his own safety and he genuinely believes there is no point to the alternative — fighting Mordor. He does not have any hope in that regard. He becomes willing to corrupt others to keep his place in a changing world.

2. Not Wanting To HARM Anyone Else Is The Secret To Happy-Go-Lucky-Ness

We all remember Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took.Pippin: We’ve had one, yes. What about second breakfast?Merry: I don’t think he knows about second breakfast, Pip.

Those 2 hobbits have literally no special powers. They stumble through life during one of the most dangerous times ever to live on Middle Earth. All they want is food. They more or less convinced the giant trees — ents — to attack Isengard.

How did they happen to even be part of the Fellowship? What do they have in common with any of the other people?

They do not have a single evil bone in their bodies, that’s what.
