I translated a German story entitled Wie wir unser echtes Leben gegen den größten unbezahlten Job der Welt eintauschen “How We Trade Our Real Lives for the World’s Biggest Unpaid Job” written by Jessica O’Czerny on Medium.
The Algorithm Consumes Your Life: The Harsh Truth about Social Media, Content Dreams, and Lost Time
Why I Decided to Translate This German Story Today
Before going to work, I wanted to publish some drafts from my publication, ILLUMINATION, as 30 volunteer editors struggle to manage it due to its size and contributions from 38,000 writers. I managed to publish around 10 drafts.
Just before leaving, I stumbled upon a story written in German. It instantly attracted my attention as German has been one of my favorite languages since childhood, and thankfully, I understand it well enough to appreciate the piece thoroughly. I translated several of my books, including my lifehacks, into German, which found a different audience that was not possible through English alone.
As I read it, I found myself deeply moved by its heartfelt, accurate, and thoughtful prose based on my decades of experience in the digital world and economy.
The writer is new, with only a small following, and in fact, this is the first story I have seen from them. Yet their story was crafted with a professionalism that belied their relative anonymity. Even though ILLUMINATION only publishes in English, I felt compelled to curate and feature this story on this platform, offering this emerging voice a chance to be heard by a broader audience.
To make it more accessible to more readers, I have quickly translated the story into English and attached the German for those who wish to experience it in that language. I am confident you will find it as compelling and meaningful as I did. I believe every creator should read this honest story.

How We Trade Our Real Lives for the World’s Biggest Unpaid Job

“Today, the algorithm determines who gets seen. It is no longer about quality.
You can spend days or weeks crafting a video, editing every second with care, telling the best story you can, and it still disappears without a trace.
I speak from my lived experiences. I have poured my heart into making videos with passion and an eye for detail for years, only to see them miss the mark I had hoped for. Client inquiries? Forget about it.
And then, you witness someone racking up millions of views with a badly-lit phone clip, a meaningless dance, or just a pout.
No real value. No substance. Yet the algorithm loves it, and everyone else just keeps clicking.
This wears you down. Not just because your content barely reaches anyone, but because you cannot help but notice the comparison: that person gets 50,000 likes, but you barely reach 50.
Suddenly, your own work feels inferior, even though it may objectively be better.
Add to this the filters, the fake worlds, the staged moments, and everything is polished to the point of unreality.
Your authentic, honest material looks “pale” in comparison. It is not that it is worse; it just does not come across as a carefully curated art product.
And this is where things get dirty.
I have seen it countless times: people follow you only so that you will follow them back, and once you do, they quietly unfollow.
It is pure ego-marketing to keep their follower numbers looking impressive.
This is not a genuine exchange. It feels like a small digital shakedown: “Follow me, but do not expect any loyalty in return.”
And yet, we keep going. Again and again. Like gamblers at a slot machine: just one more clip, one more try. Maybe this one will go viral.
But here is the painful truth: the chances of making a living from our creative work are almost nonexistent. It is not one in a hundred. Realistically, it is closer to one in ten thousand.
And here is the problem, though. Everywhere you look, many creators say, “You can make money here! Look how much I earn as a creator!”
It is sold as if you can pick up the dream and walk away with it.
What nobody tells you is that the ones making the most are not usually the creators themselves, but those selling you courses, coaching, and “exclusive training programs.”
They feed your dream, drawing in your time, energy, and money, and in the end, you have become what you are: free labor for the platform. They earn from you, not the other way around. It is all rigged from the start.
Meanwhile, nonsense videos flood the feeds: people yelling into the camera, meaningless lip-syncs, silly dance routines, long hair blowing in the wind. Millions of clicks, zero content.
I see the quality at the rock bottom. The platforms push what gets instant attention. Authentic craftsmanship sinks like a stone.
And here comes the reality check:
If I apply for a job, work eight hours a day, and come home in the evening, I usually have more to show for it by the end of the month, guaranteed, and without the lottery of the algorithm.
Many people work themselves to the bone, do their full-time jobs, and try to build up content on the side.
That means working all day, then spending hours shooting, editing, posting, and engaging, only to find, after months or even years, that it barely pays off. It is exhausting, actually; it is madness.
And while you are trying to stay present in the content game, you miss your own life. Genuine encounters fade away.
You used to chat at the checkout, meet strangers in the parking lot, and laugh with people in shops. Now: head down, eyes on your phone, get in, get out fast.
We are socially full before we even leave the house, because our timeline is already overflowing.
To me the worst part is the bad mood does not hit all at once. It slides in slowly, almost unnoticed. One video triggers you, then another. Suddenly, you find yourself stuck in a flat, negative state of mind.
I know of people who get caught in algorithm loops, politics, outrage, and disasters, at first for an hour in the evening, then three.
Friends hardly seen, relationships fall apart, because real life no longer stands a chance against the endless feed.
I remember people used to write letters. It took two weeks for one to arrive. Life was calm. But today, you are bombarded with more stimuli in two minutes than a person a hundred years ago experienced in half a year. No wonder our brains are constantly overloaded.
And the big deception: “You can earn money here! Become a creator! Build your own brand!” For 0.01 percent, it works. The rest are just cheap labor, paid in likes that mean nothing if the platform switches off tomorrow.
This story reflects my personal views, my feelings, my experiences, and my observations as a creator and consumer over several years.
To me, it feels like an endless loop where I keep pouring my time, energy, and attention into. That is how I experience it.
How about you as a creator? Do you feel the same way, or for you, is the digital economy truly the best exchange of your lifetime?”
I hope you enjoyed this story. Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts. I wish you a happy and healthy life.

As a multilingual scholar, I cover the importance and mechanisms of language learning in my upcoming book, How I Accelerated My Learning Effortlessly for a Happier Life. This comprehensive learning guide is a natural extension of my previous health-related work in Train Your Brain for a Healthier and Happier Life, Cortisol Clarity, Cellular Intelligence, and Healthspan Mastery, as learning is both a biological and psychological process.

I use this content for my new superlearners community called Superlearning with SMART MIND Loop™
When you use the SMART MIND Loop, every element (sleep, movement, attention, recall, timing, mindful encoding, input curation, nutrition, distraction management, reflection, outcome tracking, and playful practice) contributes to a living system that supports both learning and well-being.
I use chanting as a neurobics activity for neurofitness, which does not require striving for perfection. It involves returning, day after day, to simple practices that let your nervous system adapt, grow, and thrive. Over time, these rhythms build a mind that rests easily and a body that learns with joy, a foundation for a healthier, happier, and more capable you.
Your creative process should include visual cues, tactile tools, emotional rituals, and personalized triggers that signal safety and creativity. These can be music, lighting, scent, or environment. When your nervous system feels safe, your writing becomes more grounded and imaginative.
Yes, we need to challenge both body and mind for growth, but it should be within the stretch and risk zones, not in the danger zone, as I explained in the attached story, which reflects my decades of experience.
Here’s How You Can Enjoy Your Life More in Better Zones.
Why should you settle for mediocrity or stagnant business, which brings no value to your precious life? There are…medium.com
If there is one suggestion to carry forward, let it be this: keep the rhythm gentle and consistent. The most profound changes come from ordinary days, repeated choices, and a willingness to trust your body’s wisdom. In this way, your nervous system does not just support learning, but it learns how to learn every day.
Here is how to improve your nervous system based on my research and practice:

Introduction to Technology Horizons 2050 and Beyond: Emerging Technologies Shaping the Next 50 Years of Human and Machine Evolution
What will the world look like in 2050 when emerging technologies in biology, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and space exploration converge into one interconnected fabric of human and machine evolution?
In Technology Horizons 2050 and Beyond, I draw on five decades of work in technology, cognitive science, and global innovation to predict the coming five decades.

The future will not wait for us to be ready. It will unfold in the minds of those who dare to see it before it arrives, who can stand at the intersection of science and imagination, and who have the courage to turn the improbable into the inevitable. This book is an invitation to be among them.
