Why is it important?

When I first wrote this book in 2019, the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Edge Computing, and Cloud Services was an emerging horizon. Many of us sensed its potential, but few imagined how fast it would reshape industries, economies, and societies.

This updated edition carries forward the original mission of helping architects and decision-makers design dependable, ethical, and adaptive systems.
It now expands that mission to address the realities of the AI-driven era where algorithms act autonomously, devices collaborate intelligently, and edge platforms make decisions faster than humans can respond.
This 2025 edition preserves the timeless foundations of the original work (security, availability, performance, agility, and cost-effectiveness) while extending them to reflect five years of unprecedented transformation. It acknowledges that architecture today is not static documentation but continuous adaptation.
Part I: The Foundation for IoT
The first section revisits the architectural pillars that remain essential to every IoT and Cloud-based solution. These principles (security, availability, performance, agility, and cost-effectiveness) remain as relevant in 2025 as they were in 2019.
The technologies have evolved, but the reasoning behind these principles has only grown stronger.
Each chapter demonstrates how to apply these fundamentals in modern contexts, reflecting the latest security threats, governance models, and data-driven decision processes.
