Dr Lauridsen, trained as a pediatrician (child psychiatrist), works as a scientist, speaker, writer, consultant, and is a lifelong learner from Denmark into wild nature
Curator’s Note: Dr. Laust Lauridsen, a Danish pediatrician and thought leader, shares his journey as a lifelong learner engaged in exploring human potential, well-being, and resonant realities. In a conversation, he emphasizes the interconnectedness of health, participation, and personal growth. Dr. Lauridsen’s work over 40 years spans diverse fields, from medicine to leadership consulting and writing, all driven by curiosity and the desire to cultivate better relationships with reality. His writing on Medium invites exploration of philosophical questions, aiming for a deeper understanding of life and engagement. He champions building curiosity-driven relationships rather than just an audience. This interview was conducted by Dr Mehmet Yildiz, founder and chief editor of ILLUMINATION Integrated Publications on Medium, Substack, Patreon, and Digitalmehmet.
Meet Dr Laust Lauridse, Who Is the Life Wonderer, Exploring Reality, Resonance, and Human Potential
Dear readers, subscribers, and community members,
In this episode of my insightful conversations with creators, professionals, and leaders, I will introduce you to an interesting thought leader and practitioner with a medical background focusing on Tree of Sanity practices.
This conversation story offers a glimpse into Dr Laust Lauridsen, MD, who has been contributing to my publications on this platform with his thought-stimulating, educational, insightful, and engaging stories on important life matters.
Dr Laudrisen is relatively new to this platform, but he has been researching and writing in his field for over 40 years. Let’s explore his background and insights!
Hi Dr Lauridsen. Thank you for your valuable time. Let’s start with a bit about your background.
Hi Dr Yildiz, thank you for the invitation. I sometimes describe myself as a life wonderer.
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the deeper questions of existence. Why are we here? What shapes our experience? Why do some ideas live and others die? What makes people thrive?
My professional life has taken me through science, medicine, advertising, leadership consulting, education, writing, and facilitation. Looking back, they all seem like different expressions of the same curiosity.
I have spent 40 years exploring the territory where philosophical ideas meet practice.
Today, I write, speak, run workshops, conduct experiments, lead labs, facilitate strategic processes, and host community events. All with the same aim: Thriving in complexity.
Why did you choose your profession?
I don’t think I chose a profession. I followed a series of questions.
As a young man, I wanted to become a cancer researcher and win a Nobel Prize. Later, I studied medicine with plans to become a pediatrician or a child psychiatrist.
Then something unexpected happened. I was invited into an advertising agency and discovered the power of ideas, stories, and human imagination. Within a year, I had left the hospital world behind.
Since then, I have moved through many professional identities: copywriter, creative director, consultant, teacher, facilitator, speaker, philosopher, writer.
The thread connecting them all is simple: I am interested in what shapes human experience and what helps new possibilities emerge.
What do health and well-being mean to you?
Health is participation. A healthy person participates fully in life. A healthy team participates fully in its purpose. A healthy organization participates fully in its environment.
Modern culture tends to separate body, mind, relationships, and environment. Reality doesn’t. Health emerges through the ongoing interaction between biology, psychology, social life, culture, and context.
Well-being is less a state to achieve than a relationship to cultivate.
What are your hobbies, or what excites or entertains you?
My hobbies include the wild, long walks, canoeing, campfires, silence, and good company.
I used to be a passionate fly fisher. Eventually, I lost interest in catching fish and discovered that what I truly loved was the river itself. These days, I enjoy being in landscapes where nothing is trying to impress me.
I also spend a surprising amount of time volunteering on safety teams at festivals and large events. There is something beautiful about helping thousands of people have good experiences together.
What are the top three books that have affected your life?
Only three? That feels almost impossible. If I have to choose, I will pick three books that opened three different worlds.
The Double Helix by James D. Watson taught me the thrill of scientific discovery.
The User Illusion by Tor Nørretranders revealed how much of our life happens outside conscious awareness.
Theory U by Otto Scharmer introduced me to the possibility that the future can be sensed before it is fully formed.
These three remarkable books shifted my attention from matter to mind to participation.
Now, let’s talk about your writing. Why do you write on Medium?
I write on this platform because Medium allows me to think in public. Many of my articles begin as questions rather than answers.
What if reality is participatory? What if leadership is more about creating conditions than controlling outcomes? What if sanity has less to do with certainty and more to do with resonance?
Medium gives me a place to explore these questions with equally curious people. I don’t pay much attention to follower counts or applause. I am interested in resonance. When a reader responds, “This resonates with me,” something meaningful has happened.
What are your values as a writer?
I don’t know. Perhaps curiosity, a sense of quality, and coherence. And maybe some persistence, too. I try to write from direct experience rather than ideology. I am less interested in convincing people than in inviting them into a saner relationship with reality. The world already contains many good answers. What we need is better questions.
How do you connect with your readers?
Through shared exploration. I don’t position myself as an expert standing above the audience. I prefer standing beside them. Most of my writing begins with something I am genuinely wrestling with myself. The moment readers recognize their own experience in those explorations, connection happens naturally. What resonates, integrates.
Why did you join ILLUMINATION, and how do you find it so far?
Writing can become surprisingly lonely. ILLUMINATION feels more like a village of lovable nerds than a platform. What I appreciate most is the diversity of perspectives. Scientists, poets, entrepreneurs, philosophers, artists, coaches, educators, and storytellers all sharing the same space. Interesting things like what you call synergy and serendipity happen at those intersections.
Who are some writers and thinkers you follow?
My influences are eclectic. Early influencers: Carl Jung, David Bohm, Stanislav Grof, Dan Siegel, Ralph D. Stacey, Rupert Sheldrake, Sidney Banks, Eckhart Tolle. Later influencers: David Rock, Gabor Maté, Lise Feldman Barrett, Anil Seth, Joe Dispenca, Kate Raworth, and many more. What they share is a willingness to question assumptions about reality and human potential.
What are the success factors for you as a writer?
To keep writing as a joyful activity. To express myself as clearly as possible. To grow my reach through resonance and reciprocity.
What do you recommend to new writers?
Don’t build an audience. Build a relationship with your curiosity. Some people start writing to be seen. Others start writing to see. Readers will notice the difference.
What are your plans as a writer and professional?
I am currently developing two interconnected bodies of work.
The first is the Tree of Sanity, a framework for understanding human development, learning, leadership, and participation in complexity.
The second is the House of Transperience, a practical companionhood that helps people, teams, and organizations turn insight into lived experience.
Both experiments are driven by the same ambition: To help people thrive in a world that is becoming increasingly complex, interconnected, and participatory.
Or said more simply: To help save the sanity of humanity.
