Dear Subscribers,
Welcome to the new episode of my interview series. Today I will introduce you to another thought leader and professional.
Throughout my years of interviewing scientists, professionals, authors, and thought leaders from diverse disciplines, I have developed a deep appreciation for people whose intellectual curiosity refuses to remain confined within a single field. I call them polymaths, as they cover both breadth and depth across multiple disciplines.
Dr. Bernhard Kutzler is one of those rare individuals. Although he built a distinguished career as a mathematician, his lifelong pursuit of knowledge eventually led him far beyond numbers into philosophy, psychology, nutrition, consciousness, and the exploration of human potential.
What particularly intrigued me was not simply the breadth of his expertise but the courage to question his own assumptions and repeatedly reinvent his intellectual journey. Rather than remaining comfortable within an established academic discipline, he chose to explore entirely new questions about the mind, human behavior, and the nature of consciousness.
Whether readers ultimately agree with all of his conclusions or not, I believe they will appreciate the depth of his curiosity, the rigor of his thinking, and his willingness to investigate ideas that many scientists would hesitate to pursue.
In this conversation, I invited Dr. Kutzler to reflect on his remarkable journey, the motivations behind his career transitions, and the experiences that influenced his current perspective. I hope our discussion encourages readers to think more broadly about learning, self-discovery, and the value of remaining intellectually curious throughout life.
Hi Bernhard, let’s start with your background. Why did you choose your profession?
Hi Mehmet, I am a scientist with a PhD in mathematics. I chose this subject because I’ve wanted to be a mathematician ever since I was twelve. But my thirst for knowledge wasn’t satisfied by that alone, so, in addition to working as a mathematician in academia and business, I continued my education through advanced training in other disciplines, including nutrition, Ayurveda, naturopathy, hand analysis, numerology, and alchemy.
What is your current field of interest?
My current research focuses on philosophy and psychology. The transition happened as follows: After nearly 30 years in mathematics, I grew bored. I was looking for a new challenge and began a career as a mindset coach. Soon I grew bored again because I realized that people — myself included — are 99% controlled by social programs.
In 2014, I decided to explore myself to identify the programs that control me and free myself from them. I ended my relationship, said goodbye to family and friends, gave away most of my belongings, sold my apartment, and moved to a village near the Austrian mountains.
In the years that followed, I lived without social interaction or media consumption and devoted all my energy to self-exploration with the meticulousness of a mathematician.
In the course of this “reverse engineering” process, I developed a “Theory of Mind” that, among other things, helped me understand consciousness and many phenomena that traditional science cannot explain.
What do health and well-being mean to you?
They mean a great deal to me. That’s why I also became a nutritionist and took courses in naturopathy and Ayurveda. In my view, health is based on mindset and lifestyle; the most important lifestyle factors are nutrition, exercise, sleep, sunlight, and relaxation.
What are your hobbies, or what excites or entertains you?
My hobbies are art (singing and dancing) and exercise (walking, biking, swimming, and yoga).
What are the top three books that have affected your life?
My life has been affected by people, not by books. I’ve had the privilege of working with outstanding individuals. The most important of them was my doctoral advisor, Prof Bruno Buchberger, one of the most brilliant minds I’ve ever met.
Have you written any books or academic papers?
I’ve authored 24 academic articles and 26 books on mathematics.
I’ve also written 13 books on topics such as consciousness, nutrition, philosophy, numerology, and hand analysis. Some of my books are available on my author platform.
Why do you write, anyway?
Writing is “merely” a byproduct. I am a researcher and explorer; my greatest fulfillment comes from delving deeply into a subject to truly understand it. Writing is my most important tool for doing so. It is a dialogue with myself: I write, I read, I reflect, I revise… until I have a version I’m satisfied with.
For me, writing is an alchemical process in which I distill the essence of what I’m exploring and through which I grow intellectually and spiritually.
My articles and books are records of my mental voyages; I share them as step-by-step guides to new perspectives, mental travel guides to new insights.
Why do you write on Medium?
I write on Medium to share my findings and insights, and I hope for constructive exchanges with a global audience.
Do you write on other platforms like Substack? If so, how do you find them?
I also write on Substack; I like it. I have two publications, one in English and another in German, named Bernhard explores and Bernhard erforscht. I will soon launch Bernhards Numerologie.
What are your values as a writer?
I strive for absolute clarity, guided by a quote from Richard Feynman: “If you can’t explain something to a freshman, you haven’t really understood it yourself.” My writing method is the path to achieving that.
I welcome constructive criticism, which, unfortunately, is rarely found on social media nowadays. I explain what I mean by a constructive exchange in my article “Five Criteria for Good Communication”
How do you connect with your readers?
I connect with my readers through comments and eMail.
Why did you join ILLUMINATION, and how do you find it so far?
I was attracted by the publication title. Now I appreciate its effectiveness.
What are your top five stories that you want to share with your audience and why?
This is a difficult choice to make because all of my articles are dear to me, as each documents a process of personal growth. Here are five stories I am particularly fond of:
(The search for the root cause)
(Mathematics is many things… just not the art of calculation)
(Experience is more important than 1000 books and training courses)
(The worldview of the two “kingdoms”)
(Learn from the cancer death of the Indian saint Ramana Maharshi)
What are the success factors for you as a writer?
The most important one is constructive engagement with readers.
What do you recommend to the new writers?
Write about what you are passionate about.
What are your plans as a writer or as a professional?
I will continue exploring interesting topics that cross my path, and listen to and follow “cosmic guidance.” What I mean by this, I explain in my article “God or Cosmos — Part 1: What Moves the Universe?”
From my perspective, choosing a goal serves only to set a direction in the present. This direction can change. So you must continue to listen attentively to your intuition, rather than stubbornly steering toward a goal you’ve already chosen.
That is my understanding of the phrase: “The voyage is the destination.” In the following article, I explain what I mean by intuition: “Intuition Is Much More Than Just a Sixth Sense.”
