Many authors dedicate their books to family members, close friends, colleagues, or other people who have touched their lives. This book takes a different path. I dedicate it to three remarkable individuals who are no longer with us, not because they can read these words, but because their ideas, generosity, and encouragement continue to influence new generations of scientists, technologists, engineers, and lifelong learners.

A Deeply Personal Tribute to 3 Thought Leaders Who Are No Longer With Us

Every book has a story long before the first sentence is written. This one, titled Neurocomputing and Neural Architectures, began many years ago, during one of the most formative periods of my life as a young technologist and an aspiring cognitive scientist. I finally had a chance to publish it in July 2026.

Long before artificial intelligence became part of everyday conversation, before smartphones connected us instantly, and before video conferencing made international collaboration routine, I was searching for answers to challenging questions that had fascinated yet exhausted me since my youth.

How does intelligence emerge? Can machines ever learn the way biological systems learn? Why do complex systems organize themselves so elegantly despite their apparent chaos?

Challenging questions like these eventually led me into doctoral research during the early 1990s, but they also led me toward three extraordinary scientists whose work had already begun changing modern computing and information technology.

They were Dr. Marvin Lee Minsky, Dr. Seymour Aubrey Papert, and Dr. Benoît B. Mandelbrot. Although all three are no longer with us, I continue to feel their presence when I study intelligence, teach students, mentor my proteges, design complex systems, or write about the future of computing.

Throughout my five decades of professional life, I have learned from hundreds of remarkable professors, researchers, engineers, authors, colleagues, and innovators. Many generously shared their knowledge through conversations, books, lectures, collaborations, and friendship. Choosing only three people for this dedication was therefore a difficult decision I faced while completing this manuscript.

In the end, I decided to highlight these three distinguished thought leaders because they did far more than advance their respective disciplines through groundbreaking research. As polymaths and mentors, they also invested their personal time generously in encouraging the next generation of researchers, including one young scientist living on the other side of the world, Downunder.

During my master’s and doctoral years, and continuing into the early years of the new century, I was fortunate to correspond personally with each of them. At a time when electronic communication was still limited and expensive, our exchanges took place through handwritten letters that traveled across continents and monthly expensive telephone conversations made from public telephones with tokens.

Looking back today, that feels like another era altogether. There were no instant messages, no online meetings, and no social media. Every letter was carefully written, every international phone call required planning, and every conversation carried unusual significance, which I cherish in my fond memories now.

When I asked them questions in handwritten letters, their replies typically arrived four to six weeks later. By then, I had usually discovered some of the answers myself, but their unique perspectives were invaluable. They reinforced my understanding, corrected my assumptions when necessary, and guided my thinking in directions I might not have reached on my own.

Looking back, those personal exchanges became among the most valuable educational experiences of my early scientific career. They were conversations about ideas, science, learning, curiosity, and asking better questions rather than rushing toward simple answers. Each exchange strengthened my confidence that meaningful scientific progress begins with intellectual humility and genuine curiosity.

Dr Marvin Minsky encouraged me to think beyond conventional boundaries. His vision of intelligence was not confined to algorithms or machines alone. He viewed intelligence as an extraordinarily rich collection of interacting processes, an idea that continues to influence cognitive science and artificial intelligence today. His willingness to challenge accepted assumptions taught me that genuine innovation requires questioning ideas others take for granted.

Dr Seymour Papert inspired me in a different but profound way, especially while I was pursuing a master’s degree in educational computing and mastering his Logo language. His distinguished work reminded me that learning is not a passive activity. Knowledge grows through exploration, experimentation, construction, and reflection with courage and humility. As someone who has spent much of my career mentoring engineers, architects, researchers, students, and aspiring authors, I have found myself returning to Papert’s philosophy. Every learner deserves the opportunity to discover ideas rather than simply receive them.

Dr Benoît Mandelbrot, who was also a colleague at IBM, expanded my understanding of complexity itself. Before discovering his work, complexity appeared to me as something that should always be simplified or reduced. Dr Mandelbrot demonstrated that complexity contains remarkable patterns waiting to be understood. His insights into fractal geometry changed not only mathematics but also our understanding of natural systems, financial markets, biological structures, and many forms of computation. They also influenced the way I approached enterprise architecture, systems thinking, and the interconnected nature of intelligence.

Beyond their individual contributions, these three pioneers collectively helped lay much of the intellectual foundation upon which modern neurocomputing and neuroarchitectures continue to evolve.

In summary, Dr Marvin Minsky challenged generations of researchers to explore intelligence beyond conventional programming. Dr Seymour Papert demonstrated how computational thinking and human learning could enrich one another, inspiring new directions in cognitive science, education, and artificial intelligence. Dr Benoît Mandelbrot revealed that complexity follows elegant mathematical principles, encouraging scientists and engineers to recognize patterns within systems once considered too irregular to understand.

In combination, their scholarship transcended disciplinary boundaries. Through decades of research, teaching, writing, mentoring, and scientific leadership, they empowered countless neuroscientists, computer scientists, mathematicians, engineers, cognitive scientists, and technologists to think more boldly, collaborate more openly, and pursue questions that continue shaping the future of intelligent systems.

Although each mentor influenced different aspects of my scientific development, they shared remarkable qualities. They were intellectually fearless but also humble. They crossed disciplinary boundaries without hesitation. They welcomed difficult questions.

Most importantly, they encouraged younger researchers to think independently. That encouragement mattered more than they probably realized. I wonder whether they knew how profoundly their generosity would influence the careers of so many young researchers, including my own.

Like countless other scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technologists around the world, I benefited not only from their publications but also from their generosity. Their willingness to support emerging researchers created ripples that extended far beyond their own laboratories and universities. Every student they inspired eventually influenced others, creating an intellectual legacy that continues to expand long after their passing.

As I completed this neurocomputing book, I found myself reflecting on those early conversations. The technologies described throughout these chapters have advanced beyond anything we could have imagined during many of those discussions.

Artificial intelligence now assists scientific discovery. Neuromorphic processors are becoming reality. Brain-computer interfaces continue advancing. Intelligent systems support medicine, industry, education, scientific research, and many other fields.

Yet the questions these mentors encouraged me to ask remain remarkably unchanged. Technologies evolve rapidly, but the deepest scientific questions endure across generations.

What is intelligence? How do we learn? How should we design systems that serve humanity wisely? How do we balance scientific ambition with ethical responsibility? These questions continue guiding my own work today.

If readers discover anything valuable within the pages of this neurocomputing book, they should know that this book represents much more than my own efforts. It is part of a much longer intellectual journey influenced by teachers, colleagues, researchers, students, and mentors who believed that knowledge grows through generous collaboration.

Among them, three individuals left an especially sustainable imprint on my personal and professional life. For that reason, I dedicate this book with profound respect, gratitude, and affection to Dr. Marvin Minsky, Dr. Seymour Papert, and Dr. Benoît Mandelbrot.

Their remarkable lives remind us that scientific discoveries can change the world, but the encouragement we offer another human being may change the future in ways we never have the opportunity to witness.

Their powerful voices are no longer with us, yet their ideas continue inspiring new generations of scientists, engineers, educators, and innovators around the world. As one of the many fortunate beneficiaries of their generosity and wisdom, I will remain forever grateful.

I believe that every scientific breakthrough begins as an idea, every idea begins with curiosity, and curiosity flourishes when someone caring believes in another person’s potential. Therefore, mentorship became a lifelong pursuit for me.

If you are an aspiring scientist, technologist, engineer, or curious lifelong learner, I encourage you to explore their remarkable work, much of which is now publicly available in books and peer-reviewed journals. Their ideas remain as relevant today as when they were first published.
