Dear Subscribers, visitors, writers, and readers,
In this post, I will introduce another writer of our community. Welcome to another episode of my conversations with professionals and leaders in their field. In today’s episode, I invited Dr Edward Serdioukov to introduce himself. He is a new writer on Medium but not new to writing, with significant contributions to the IT industry and to the body of knowledge in computing and the physical and mathematical sciences. I invite you to follow his profile and explore his stories and apps.
Hello Dr Serdioukov, welcome! Please tell us a bit about your background.
Hello Dr Yildiz. Thank you for this interview opportunity. As a new writer on this platform, it means a lot to me. I’d be glad to share some highlights from my background.
I have been a computer software professional with many years of experience, based in Minsk, Belarus. I graduated from Belarusian State University with a degree in Applied Mathematics and later earned a PhD in Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Over the course of my career, I’ve come a long way, from working as a software developer to serving as Executive Director of a software outsourcing department at an IT company, where I led teams, managed client projects, and shaped technical strategy to drive the company’s long-term success.
I’m now retired and mainly build apps for myself, occasionally taking on custom projects. My current work centers on mobile app development for iOS and Android, as well as web applications. I create tools in areas that matter to me personally: sports analytics, travel planning and logistics, financial planning, health tracking, collecting and numismatics, and other practical utilities. I build whatever I need at the moment, and thankfully, the rise of AI has significantly sped up development, from prototyping to implementation.
In addition to coding, I handle the full publishing pipeline, including preparing builds, managing submissions, and maintaining apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Console. I also work on monetization strategies and user engagement, analyzing feedback and usage data to improve the products over time.
I have also started writing articles for Medium to share my experience and get feedback from readers. My posts cover mobile development, practical tech, and lessons learned from building real-world products. Writing helps me clarify my thinking, document my journey, and connect with a community of developers and tech enthusiasts.

Why did you choose your profession?
I chose this profession because it combines deep problem-solving with tangible impact. My background in applied mathematics and a PhD in mathematical sciences led me naturally to software, where I can turn abstract ideas into real products people use every day. Even now, in retirement, I keep building because development gives me freedom, creativity, and the ability to solve my own problems with code.
What do health and well-being mean to you?
To me, health and well-being are the foundation that makes everything else possible, such as family, work, creativity, and long-term planning. From my perspective, health is not just the absence of illness; I see it as the energy and clarity to stay focused, learn new things, and enjoy each day.
Despite facing certain health challenges, I do everything in my power to support my body. I don’t let those limitations dictate terms to me; instead, they have taught me to treat myself with even greater care and attention, especially in my retirement years.
For me, well-being means a sustainable rhythm of life, including sufficient sleep, regular movement, and mental space to think without constant stress. At this stage of my life, I focus on balance, finding time for personal growth, writing, sports, and rest without burning out. I view health and wellbeing as a long-term investment: the better I take care of myself today, the more I can create, explore, and achieve in the years ahead.
What are your hobbies, or what excites or entertains you?
Outside of programming, I enjoy following sports, especially the WNBA, and exploring sports statistics and analytics. I also like traveling and planning practical travel routes.
Another interest of mine is collecting, particularly numismatics; I have even built an app to catalog my collection of Olympic coins.
I enjoy experimenting with new development tools, AI-assisted workflows, and ideas for useful apps. I also read technology-related content and write articles and blog posts. What excites me most is learning something new and turning that knowledge into a practical tool or a well-structured article.
Why did you join Medium and why do you write here?
I joined Medium and write here for two main reasons: clarity of thought and value to the community.
First, writing is my way of organizing knowledge. When you solve a complex technical problem, building something is only half the battle; explaining how and why it works forces you to think more systematically.
Second, I strongly believe in open knowledge sharing. Instead of letting solutions stay buried in private notes, publishing them on Medium allows me to save another developer hours of debugging or inspire someone to build their own side-project.
Do you write on other platforms like Substack?
Yes, I also publish on Substack for longer, newsletter-style posts. I find it better for building a direct audience and owning the relationship with my subscribers.
What are your values as a writer?
My core values as a writer are сlarity, honesty, and usefulness to my readers. I aim to write pieces that help readers solve real-life problems, avoid hype, and cite concrete steps or examples to make their lives a little better.
How do you connect with your readers?
I write from real-world experience, encourage discussion in the comments, and iterate on my posts based on reader feedback. I also provide links to code repositories in GitHub, screenshots, and live demos whenever appropriate so readers can easily verify and reproduce the results.
Why did you join ILLUMINATION, and how do you find it so far?
I joined ILLUMINATION because it’s one of the most vibrant, diverse, and supportive publications on Medium. As an author who writes about technical projects and practical tools, I wanted to reach a broader, curious audience beyond just deep niche circles. So far, my experience has been great. The editors are remarkably fast and supportive. I have also discovered your Technology Hits publication, part of the ILLUMINATION group, and will soon share my technical content there.
Who are some writers you follow on Medium or other platforms?
I follow writers who blend engineering, product thinking, and data; for instance, authors writing about mobile development, app growth, and practical analytics.
For example, I read publications like Python in Plain English and JavaScript in Plain English for clean, hands-on tutorials. I also follow sports analytics outlets like AllSports (with writers like bontonson) to see how complex performance metrics and data visualizations are translated into engaging stories.
Overall, I appreciate creators who don’t just write about code in isolation, but show how technical decisions impact real products and user experience.
What are your top five stories that you want to share with your audience and why?
Yes, I’d be glad to share some of my stories with your audience. Each highlights a unique intersection of technology, practical problem-solving, and my domain passion:
How Caitlin Clark Got Me into the WNBA & Inspired Me to Build a Player Compare App: It shows how personal curiosity and sports analytics can spark a real software project. It bridges fan passion with data visualization. I linked my app on the App Store and Google Play for interested readers.
Sports Analytics Meets Hybrid Mobile: Building a Player Compare App with React and Capacitor: This is the technical deep-dive following the WNBA story. It provides actionable value to developers by walking through cross-platform architecture, mobile UI, and turning raw sports metrics into clean heatmaps.
Evolving My Travel Maps into a Complete Offline Planner: The Journey of MyTravelPlanner: It focuses on real-world utility and offline-first mobile architecture. It demonstrates product evolution — taking a basic mapping tool and transforming it into a full-fledged travel companion based on actual user needs in the field.
Olympic Games in Your Pocket: Reimagining Coin Collecting for the Digital Age: It redefines a traditional, offline hobby (numismatics) through modern digital tools. It resonates with collectors who want clean, mobile-friendly ways to track and catalog commemorative series.
From the Depths of Time to Milan: A Brief History of Olympic Coins: It delivers deep context and storytelling. Before building digital tools for collectors, it’s essential to respect the history — tracing Olympic coinage from ancient Greece all the way to Milano-Cortina 2026.
What are the success factors for you as a writer?
I define my success as a writer by three metrics: reproducibility, authentic storytelling, and real reader impact. Across my articles, whether I’m writing about sports analytics, mobile development, or the history of coin collecting, a successful piece is one where readers get real value: a working demo, transparent source code, or a fresh perspective on how to combine tech with their own hobbies. If my writing sparks a constructive discussion in the comments or helps another creator solve a problem, it’s a success.
What do you recommend to the new writers?
Start small and ship: write about problems you actually solved. Use concrete examples, code snippets, and screenshots. Publish early, then refine based on comments and data.
What are your plans as a writer or as a professional?
Professionally, I plan to deepen my expertise in cross-platform app development, improve UI/UX based on user feedback, and strengthen the backend infrastructure for my apps.
As a writer, I want to grow a library of practical guides on mobile publishing, analytics, and monetization, and expand into more data-driven stories.
Thank you, Dr Yildiz, for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself. I look forward to contributing to your publications and great community on Medium, Substack, and other platforms.
